Celebrating girls & teens

As you may be aware, we have declared March to be International Women’s Month here at Lunapads, and as part of that we are focusing on different groups of – (well, that part’s obvious!) Today, it’s time to send up a cheer for the future women out there: girls.

Where to start with the subject of girls? Our view is that girls are nothing less than the world’s greatest hope for healing, progress and peace. At Lunapads, we support them by supporting and spreading the word about a variety of organizations working with and for girls including Scarleteen, the Girl Effect (don’t miss their awesome video!), Camfed, Not For Sale and of course Pads4Girls. We also love progressive girls’ media like Shameless, New Moon and Teen Voices.

At Lunapads, 100% of the proceeds of the sale of Teen Booklets goes towards Pads4Girls. We also distribute free copies to organizations that are working with girls and teens.

What especially warms our hearts is when we get emails, phone calls and ‘live-chats’ from girls (or moms of girls and teens) asking great questions and telling us their stories. The day before yesterday we were visited by a Mom and her daughter who was on the second day of her first period – we felt really lucky to share some time with them, on International Women’s Day, no less!

Here’s a wonderful example of a girl’s self-expression about her first period – a bittersweet poem written by Lacy Hale. Lacy says: “The following is a poem that I wrote a couple years ago when I decided to make my change from commercial menstrual products to healthier, greener alternatives. When I was a teenager, I definitely thought of my period as a curse and dreaded it each month. Now that I’m older, I find that I actually enjoy my period, taking the time to reflect on my art, my life, and what it means to me to be a woman. “

My River

The summer that I started
Was desert-like and dry
Yet I awoke that morning shrouded in wet red rivers
Of which I had yet to learn the ebb
And flow.

Yelling for my mother,
It was no surprise to her
Because of the complaints
Concerning the belly
Of the 13 year old girl
The night before.

I suppose in some sort of celebration
She made a breakfast that morning
Of the likes I had rarely seen.

But my stomach was full
Of other things and pains
So new I barely touched
My biscuits
And gravy.

My father came home that evening
And without words or glance
Tossed my necessities on the counter.
A look of fear and anger in his eyes.

Or maybe I just misread it
Out of my own embarrassment.

This week we are giving away 3 Teen Kits: leave a comment here telling us about your favorite girl or teen (this includes you, if you happen to be one of these fabulous beings!) to be eligible for the giveaway. Be sure to include your age, location, relationship (ie sister, friend, daughter, Mom) and what you love about this person. Have fun and good luck! I don’t know if I qualify but I have recently switched to reusable products (not just pads, but I’ve stopped using paper towels and napkins, too. I’m trying to go totally disposable paperless) and I would love to win this kit!

I wish there were some young women in my life but I seem to be surrounded by men at this point.

Hi, my favourite teen is my cousin, who is 12 years old. She is a really big girl in every way, and what I like most of her is that she is never even a bit embarrased about being big, I love how natural she is.
My age is 34 years and I’m from Madrid – Spain.

My favorite teen girl/young lady would have to be my younger sister. Sweet sixteen and although we have been fighting alot she is always there for me as I am for her. She is amazing and watching her blossom into a young lady makes me so proud. I love her insanely and am so glad to call her my sister.

Oh.. I (44) would love to have my teen daughter Tamar be one of the recipient of this giveaway. She loves to be ‘just like her mom’. Always observing things I do. It would be an honor to have her follow my footsteps in a ‘greener’ period. Mahalo from the Aloha State of Hawaii.

My favorite teen is my daughter KT. She LOVES your pads. :) She actually is featured in your teen booklet! I love knowing she’s a positive influence in other teen’s lives!
She’s done so well with your products she’s convinced me to switch to Lunapads and a Divacup and I LOVE everything!!!!
KT would love to spruce up her stock of Lunapads since hers are a few years old now. :)

    Hi Luna Ladies,
Your timing is perfect. I have been thinking about putting together a special box for my tween. I want to include a lovely selection of Luna Pads, a hand mirror and some other little treats for when her day comes!
    We live in Vancouver BC.

My young cousin is 16 and lives in Alberta, I in Ontario. I have not seen her for several years, but we keep in touch online. I have a TON of cousins, older and younger, as well as 8 siblings (3 sisters). My cousin Lauren though is amazing! While much of the women in the family stand idle during conflict, Lauren fights for what she thinks is right! The only one other than myself to recognize and take hold of her deserved respect. She has 3 younger siblings and has helped raise them (in a big way). Cooking, cleaning, babysitting and helping with homework. I really don’t know how she does it, but I really look up to my little cousin <3

This is such a great idea! My favorite teen is one of my college buddies. While most of us begin freshman year at age 18, she came straight here from India when she was 15 and impresses me every day. She’s faced the challenging coursework and the emotional stresses of college life and come out ahead every time, but she also balances the culture shock of being in a new country away from her family at such a young age with grace. We share a common chronic illness, and she’s been an inspiration to me when it comes to succeeding in spite of disability. I’m 22, the teen I love is my best friend, and we go to school in California.

The most amazing teen in my world is definitely my younger sister M. I believe she might have some superpowers, as time and again I have seen her excel in anything she chooses to work at. In order to explain what I love about M, I’ll have to write an essay! :P
Now thirteen years old, she consistently achieves at a high level in every subject in school; whether it’s creative writing, advanced math, or proposals for the Middle East peace process, she absolutely shines at anything her teachers ask of her.
In addition, M is a gifted artist. She started practicing her drawing skills as soon as she was old enough to hold a crayon and hasn’t stopped working at it since. Her skill, combined with her profound love of wildlife, has brought forth many beautiful works of art.
Before I finish bragging about her, let me also mention that she has taken part in track and field competitions in her school, and her determination and effort demonstrate what a strong young lady she really is.
M is a sweet, loving sister and is beautiful inside and out. I know she often looks to me as a role model, and this is one of the greatest responsibilities (and joys) in my life. In every way, she is one teen who deserves to be celebrated!

    Hi Ladies!

I have been stashing away some wonderful goodies for my daughter for the last two years in preparing for her menarche. She is almost 12 and is blossoming into a beautiful woman. She has not yet entered womanhood but rest assured she will have a loving and welcoming rite of passage. Luna pads would be wonderful treat for this entrance!

I’m 25, and my favorite teen is my younger brother’s girlfriend, who is 15. We have discussed lunapads in the past and she is very keen on the idea. She is saving up to buy some now, but it would be so awesome if the Lunapads gals would give her this teen kit, especially since her b-day is in April.

    Thanks!

My favorite teen is my daughter, Kaeylarae, age 12 (13 in May). She is everything I wish I was when I was her age, and even now. She is unafraid of who she is. She represents womankind in her blossoming body and is unashamed. While many of her peers are ruled by others’ opinions, she is making her own path and taking a select few with her. She shows compassion for all and stands up for her beliefs. As a teen mother, I feared for the lessons my daughter would learn from the example I provided. I am proud to say that my daughter is showing myself and others an enlightened path in a very dark woods. I have learned so much from her and would love to reward her with her own teen kit (we are having to share a kit currently). Thank you for helping women and the environment, Lunapads! -Brandi (age 30), Mother of incredible teen in Alabama, USA

my favorite girl is my niece. She is very thoughtful and kind to others and I love to hear her express her deep thoughts and feelings. I feel blessed for the opportunity to watch her grow. A 34 year old Aunt in MI

My oldest daughter, Katia (11) is the light of my life. It’s so cute watching the changes in her body through her eyes. She came home with a “kit” from school with disposable pads, and was so sure it was going to happen then she wanted to carry one with her “just in case”! Now we are seeing more developmental cues she will be starting and I would love to be able to treat her to such a lovely product!

  • Vicki

My oldest daughter Hannah will be twelve this year and is soon to start her first cycle. I would love for her to start out right with cloth pads. I have had her watch your videos so that she can form her own opinions. She loves the bright colors and styles. She would love to have her own teen kit! We have five daughters and Hannah is a big influence on all of them. I would love for all of my daughters to follow in her and my foot steps by using cloth pads. Thank you for the oportunity to try them for free! Vicki (37) mother of five daughters, Idaho:)

  • Renee Otto

I have a daughter soon ‘coming of age’ that I wish to start off on your product from the very start. Coming from Australia she may just be within a small minority that uses this product but I know she’s brave and can stand up for her self and her beleifs especially when it comes to her health and the health of the planet – Thanks LunaPads for this life lesson for my daughter to learn so early in life and not as late as it was for me. ;)
