We’re also offering a little giveaway for diehard Divas, but first I’d like to start by offering some personal DivaCup testimonials from the Lunagals. Ladies, why does the DivaCup rock?

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

Madeleine: “I have to confess that I was skeptical about internal products of any variety for a long time after I stopped using tampons, but the DivaCup has won me over. It can take a bit of getting used to, but once you get comfortable with it, it can be a total lifesaver, especially if you’re traveling or into sports. For all that I am about women connecting with their cycles, sometimes the realities of life dictate the necessity of simply getting on with your day – the DivaCup allows you to do this with minimal hassle, especially since you don’t need to change it as often as tampons.”

Suzanne: “The DivaCup has become indispensable to me in the first few days of my period, as my flow has recently gotten substantially heavier (is it from having 2 kids, getting older, or both?) Now that I’ve figured out a reliable routine on how to use the DivaCup on the road (ie: peri bottle, wysi-wipes, extra pantyliners, check, check, check!) I’m totally set for the day.”

Julie: “The DivaCup is subtle, reusable, cost-efficient and eco-friendly. I definitely do not miss last minute disposable tampon and pad runs. I feel empowered by my DivaCup!”

Morgan: ” I really like the fact that the DivaCup can accommodate any type of flow without absorbing “the friendlies”. With my period I never really know whether it’s gonna be a heavy day or a light day and trying to handle that situation using tampons was never fun. Ever put a tampon in expecting a heavy flow day and then discovered upon a very painful removal that it was actually a light flow day? ya…ouch.”

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

We are giving away a “DivaCup Accessory Kit”, which includes a Peri Bottle, Wysi Wipes, DivaWash, Travel Pouch and a Mini Pantyliner – basically, everything you might need except a DivaCup (because you already have one!) This giveaway is for you gals who have already taken the Diva leap, and what we’d like to know is, what advice do you have for other women considering trying it? The winner will be announced in the June newsletter – good luck!

And for those of you still thinking about it, order one today and save an additional 15% off this month!

A friend recommended the DivaCup about six years ago. I love it and would never dream of going back to tampons. I’m blessed/cursed with a very short cycle that lasts sometimes close to ten days, but with the DivaCup, I never have to worry about what my flow is like. To top it off, it is so comfortable, you almost have to remind yourself it is there! So my advice is make the switch – whether it is for comfort, eco-friendly and/or cost reasons. You won’t regret it!

  • meri

My advice would be to give the DivaCup a chance, even if you normally do not use tampons. I rarely used tampons because I was not comfortable with inserting them but after hearing wonderful reviews I gave it a shot. Inserting and removing the cup takes practice but gets easier with some deep breaths and time.

I’ve had a DivaCup for a little over a year and have saved money by only buying one box of pads in that time, as opposed a box every other month. Using the Divacup prompted me to consider cloth pads, which brought me over to LunaPads. I still have the box of pads for backup-backup but they rarely get much use.

My primary advice for someone considering a menstrual cup is to do some self-exploration before trying one. Not only will it make it easier to conquer the learning curve, but you can also use the knowledge of your internal anatomy to choose the brand that fits your body best. There’s more available than just the Diva, so check out the size charts on menstrualcups.org (http://community.livejournal.com/menstrual_cups/1285963.html) before making a purchase.

  • Kaledrina672

I did all the livejournal community reading, I checked sizes of menstrual cups, I read about different folds and watched videos. I was thoroughly prepared, but since I had only used tampons, what I wasn’t prepared for was that a cup, Diva or any other, doesn’t quite go in the same way as tampons. you angle it differently, and you have to be comfortable getting your hands up in things to check it. The single most useful piece of advice? SIT DOWN to put it in. I always put in tampons standing, as per the instructions, but trying this with the cup was disastrous. Sitting down, it goes in easy every time. just be careful not to drop it. Relax, be patient with your new cup and yourself, and finally stop stressing over your period!

I’ve had the Diva since shortly after my first son was born, and love it… I’m pregnant right now, so I’m not currently using mine, but will never go back to full-time disposables.

My advice would be to do some googling and check out people’s suggestions on different folds… I was amazed to discover that people had invented different ways to fold their Divas for insertion, rather than using the fold recommended in the official instructions. I found that I had a lot more success with a different method, and it was just very cool to see how people were getting creative and finding new ways to make the product more use-able for different folks!

My second piece of advice – take a close look at the price tag of a box of tampons, and think about if you really want to spend that, every month, until menopause.

  • Roxie

My advice to first time Diva users is to RELAX and be patient. Sometimes it takes a few tries to learn how to insert the cup properly and open it to create the right amount of suction. I also advise them to read/watch YouTube videos about all the different folds to find the easiest one for you. A great place to discuss and learn about menstrual cups is http://www.menstrualcups.org. Reading personal experiences with the cup is beyond helpful. Good luck and I’m sure using the up with change your life like it’s done mine!

    I. Love. My Diva Cup! But in order to get used to it and make sure it works right for you, here’s my advice:

    1) Don’t be afraid to get your hands dirty. You might think it’s gross to fool around down there until you make sure the cup is in the right position. But if it’s not in correctly it might leak… and your hands are much easier to wash than your panties, jeans, etc.!

    2) Trim the tab at the bottom little by little until it’s at a comfortable length for you. Once the Diva Cup is in correctly and is the right fit, you will sing its praises just like I do!

  • Shannon

The diva cup is one of the best things I’ve ever bought. I was really skeptical when I first read about it on the Luna Pads site. I’ve been using it now for three years and would never go back. The diva is comfortable, convenient, and economical. It’s great to not have to worry about buying pads and tampons. It takes a little getting used to, but after that it’s really easy. I’ve told all my friends, and have convinced a few to switch.

  • Stacey

I love my divacup. It has given me freedom I never had when using disposal menstrual products. It has also made me more aware of how much I bleed during my cycle, which makes me feel more in control of my body. I have a bit of a heavy flow and so I would always leak through onto my panties or even pants…so embarrasing, even if no one noticed. I don’t leak now. I don’t have to worry so much about changing all the time, I don’t feel scared that I left a tampon in too long, it’s all good with the diva cup. My advice would be try it, it might seem pricey but when you compare to what you spend regularly on dispoables, it’s not. Try it and give yourself time to learn to use it! You’ll be glad you did.

  • April

I first discovered the DivaCup at REI (an outdoor store) and was very curious about because I am very outdoorsy. I wasn’t so sure about it at first because I had tried some disposable menstrual cups called Instead, and they were uncomfortable, messy to remove and they leaked. After reading tons of positive reviews I decided to give it a shot. I think the most important thing I could tell anyone about the DivaCup is to expect a learning curve. Don’t think it won’t happen to you, it will! The first time I used mine, I thought I was never going to get it out! But I did and I will never go back to using tampons again. I read lots of suggestions online and was able to figure out the best methods for me in terms of inserting and removing the cup. Everyone is different. The DivaCup is so comfortable that I often forget that I am on my period. I can wear it all day without having to empty. And I have to say the best part is that I find it so exciting to have such an eco-positive period that I actually look forward to it! Try it, you couldn’t possibly regret it!

  • Katie

You HAVE to try it! I think most women have such a negative view about using a reusable product because all they know is how NASTY a tampon is, so they think it would be like rinsing out a tampon during the day. BUT it’s NOT! :) It’s SO different! And after using a cup for a few cycles, things begin to feel really “clean” and natural. Like it’s just how life is. OH, and *there’s a lot less smell!* ;-)

  • Victorua

The best advice I can give to a new Diva Cup user is: Don’t give up!! It takes up to 2 periods until you figure out the routine. There are more then 2 types of folds to use, so if either one is causing you problems in any way (leaking or whatever) try the others! My favorite is the “Seven Fold” since it has not failed me yet. You can find these other folds on the Internet.

The cup has changed the way I view my period. Once that cup is in place I don’t need to worry about it, or plan my day around when I can use the washroom (like I had to with tampons). It may look uncomfortable but when it is positioned correctly you can’t feel a thing. Give it time, don’t give up, and good luck to all the new users!!

  • Melissa Phinney

Keep some diva wash with your diva cup in your purse you never know when you may need it! And cut the little thing that stick down alot lower, will make it more comfy :)

  • Kris

Do it!! I can’t believe I sat on the fence for as long as I did.

What I love about it: It never leaks (never, and I’m what my best friend calls a “prolific” bleeder, so I would know). If you’re super heavy like me, put a cloth pad or liner under it because after emptying it, you might have residual whatevers, but it does not leak. I love falling asleep and not worrying about leaving a tampon in too long. (I do use a Luna blanket under it during my first night or two because sometimes it does fill up if I sleep a long time). I love that I don’t have to worry about the dog eating it out of the garbage. I love not having to worry about pads or tampons while shopping. I love that it doesn’t dry me out or irritate my skin.

Advice for first-timers: wear something under it for awhile until you figure out how it feels when sealed right, because I did have some leakage problems initally. Keep at it…I promise it will be worth it! Don’t cut the stem until you know your own insides (it goes further inside me as time goes on so I am grateful for the full stem). In public restrooms, take something with you into the stall (wet paper towels work) to wash your hands and/or wipe it down. Also, make sure to wipe the toilet seat down when done…I’ve gotten some on there while dumping and my partner does not love that so much.

Oh, yeah, and one more reason I love it (too much information ahead). It catches what it needs to but doesn’t dry me totally out, and so my partner and I can have some fun intimate times during my period that were more difficult before!

  • http://www.TruthBeToldBlog.com Valorie

My first cycle with the diva cup was different. It took a couple tries to try and make sure it was inserted properly.

However, I was ecstatic with it. I could go out all day not worry about carrying anything with me.

The diva cup is different than lunapads but I do highly recommend it. Also if this is your first cycle I recommend using a lunapad or lunapanties with it, just incase you don’t have it placed right.

I will never go without the divacup. It is event great to use at night. I love change so i alternate between the Lunapads and Divacup but I can tell you a day of errands on your period is much easier with the diva cup.

    :) I <3 Lunapads.com!

  • Sandra

Wow – never have I thought that while having my actual period I didn’t really have to ‘think’ about it. The Diva Cup makes it all the better. To know that you are not contributing to the environmental waste is another ease off my mind. I’ll never look back at conventional menstrual products. COME ON ladies, lets ALL have a monthly DIVA Period!

  • Jennifer Arsenault

I’ve been using the DivaCup for more than 5 years now and I love it. It took me a while to make the switch to reusable. I had a friend that tried to get me to switch years before, but I think it’s like anything else, you need to be ready. Now, I tell everyone who will listen about Lunapads and the DivaCup.

First, I think you need to be comfortable with your body. I used to be able to insert a tampon without even touching skin to skin. You can’t do that with the DivaCup. I found the best place to practice inserting it was squatting in the shower.

If you are wondering how you will handle emptying the cup in public washrooms, don’t worry about that for now. Even if you only ever use it at home, that is still better than not using it at all.

I love that I can wear the cup all night long and not have to worry about toxic shock. I love that I can empty the cup before I go out even when it isn’t full and don’t have to worry about dryness. And I love that I am not adding to the landfills every month.

As one last piece of advice, keep away from cats. LOL I’ve lost two cups because the cats thought they were chew toys. Let’s just say, I now have child proof locks on my bathroom cupboards. :)

  • Kari

The key in making the DivaCup a part of my monthly routine was experimenting with folds until I found the one that worked best for me. Also, being calm and relaxed when working with the cup for the first time is super important. I like to wear lunapanties with mine just to feel more secure–but have never really needed them (they just happen to be SUPERBLY comfortable).

I will never switch back. The combination of the Diva cup and Lunapads and panties have changed my cycle forever!

My first tip would be to read through the information already available on Lunapads, because knowledge is power, right?
    http://lunapads.com/tips-and-advice/how-to-use-the-divacup
I personally found this video by Madeleine and Suzanne to be particularly helpful:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S5eC-7nUnog#t=1m20s

It really is important to be relaxed when attempting to insert or remove the DivaCup–if you’re really stressed, then put it down and do something relaxing, like taking a shower. Or, try again while in that nice, warm shower.

Here are some other tips that may sound weird at first read, but they’ve really helped me a lot!

When washing the cup, make sure you use very warm water, to heat the silicone to body temperature. You are definitely going to feel a cold cup, and it isn’t going to feel nice. Warming it first will help make it “disappear.”

Once the cup is inserted, try rotating it while sitting down on the toilet–this will push it forward and you won’t need to dig for it as you rotate.

When taking the cup out, short nails can be a blessing. More than once have I accidentally pinched more than just the DivaCup, because of my long nails. Ouch! If you just had a manicure or trimming those nails are simply out of the question (guitar player?), then be aware of how long those nails extend!

While the cup is in, don’t think about it. You have more important things to do than focus on your period! Let the DivaCup do all the work.

But that doesn’t mean to completely forget about it–set a schedule so you remember when to change it. Mine is like this: 1. in the morning when I get up, 2. in the afternoon when I get home, and 3. in the evening before I go to bed. This gives me a lot of flexibility, so I’m not rushing to clean it. And I keep a package of Wysi Wipes (http://lunapads.com/wysi-wipes.html) in my purse so that I can clean it any time during the day if I need to.

  • Danielle

I’ve had a Diva Cup for 6 years now. In my day-to-day life, I’ve only talked to one person who admitted to using one. Everyone one else thinks it’s extremely gross. There is a learning curve (especially figuring out the best way to empty it in a public washroom, which I have to do because of very heavy flow), but you likely weren’t perfect the first time you put in a tampon either. My advice is to just try it. If you’re thinking about it, you already know the reasons why you want to, so don’t let let those people who think it’s gross change your mind – besides how will they ever know you’ve made the switch if you don’t tell them?

  • Becki

    1. The DivaCup is more pliable when warm, so it’s easier to insert after you’ve just emptied it and are putting it back in. If you’re washing it, use hot water to warm it.

    2. Empty and re-insert while taking your shower in the morning! Least mess and stress possible. I sit down on the side of the tub to insert it, rather than stand. Other times, I insert it while sitting on the toilet.

    3. Boiling it really does make it look nice and clean – but set a timer and don’t forget about it while it’s on the stove.

    4. It feels so good to know you don’t have to buy tampons anymore. Rather self-righteous. Self-sufficient. Instead of being a slave to the drugstore, you’ve got your needs covered. Period? No problem! I’m there.

  • http://me-lace.blogspot.com lace

My tip is to give it some time to get used to it. Don’t give up and read the livejournal site. It’s great for all kinds of information. The best was all the different folding techniques.

  • Noel

I have only had my Diva Cup for about a year and cannot imagine having my period without it. After a short learning curve which lasted about one cycle, in which I found out which fold worked best for my body and the best position for insertion and removal, my monthly period has become less painful and much less stressful. I have worn my cup while traveling, cycling, hiking, camping, and practicing yoga without a problem. Because it does not need to be changed as often as tampons, I have actually forgotten that I was on my period and can now sleep through the night without worrying about leaks. I love that the Diva Cup is healthier for my body and better for the environment and I only wish that I had discovered it earlier!

  • Amanda Z.

Menstrual Cups are indeed as wonderful as everyone on the web says they are, but you have to give them a proper chance and possibly drop some inhibitions.

After a painful failure at trying to insert my Diva Cup, it took me six months to dare to try again. I needed a tube of lube, but since that first insertion in January 2006, I’ve tossed exactly one pad and one tampon in the trash.

Cups are the cleanest, cheapest, safest, most practical, most environmentally friendly and most comfortable way of containing menstrual flow. Using them is acquired skill, but well worth the effort. Try it!

  • Jenni K.

    Menstural Cup Advice Class, 101:
Get one. No, seriously. It will cost you less money over time, it will mean less mess, and a lot less worrying about what you need to take with you, when you need to go, etc.

    Menstrual Cup Advice Class, 201:
Changing in the shower is the absolute best. Next best is if you are in a bathroom where the toilet is right next to a sink.

    Menstrual Cup Advice Class, 301:
If you are having suction problems getting the cup out? First try the pinch and push method (pinch the bottom of the cup to collaps it, then push out with your internal muscles) and if that doesn’t work, try my patented suction breaking method. While pinching the bottom of the cup, push it back towards the tailbone in such a way that you are bringing the top edge of the cup forward at the same time. This will eventually break the seal and allow you to pull out easily.

  • Leah Einhorn

My best advice to give to a new diva cup user that helped me tremendously was youtube! Watch the videos on how and the best angle to insert them and I was able to finally get mine to work for me, its not graphic at all means they use a glass to show you how it should go in but I am so happy to not be using tampons anymore its been about a year now!
