New Comparison Videos on YouTube!

Tuesday, July 12th, 2011 by Lunapads Team

layerslabel New Comparison Videos on YouTube!

We get curious fence-sitters e-mailing and calling in all the time asking us how Lunapads compare to the disposable brands that they’re use to. Although we are more than happy to answer any of your questions, we thought…really, there must be a better way to communicate the effectiveness of our products to you!

Our solution? 4 brand new Lunapad Youtube videos comparing disposable brands with some of our most popular cloth products. Watch our reusable pads go through the classic absorbency test and see how switching definitely doesn’t mean having to sacrifice function!

Specifically, we compare Lunapad products with: the Stay Free Maxi with Thermo Control, the Carefree Pantyliner, the Stayfree Maxi with Dry Max, and the Always Infinity Overnight.

The DivaCup vs. tampons!

Wednesday, May 25th, 2011 by Madeleine

We often get asked what the difference is between The DivaCup and tampons. As is the case with disposable pads and Lunapads, it really is a bit of an apples and oranges situation, however this video answers some important questions about differences in size and respective amounts of waste generated.

the Lunagals talk shop!

One of Suzanne and my favorite things about working at Lunapads is being involved in a vibrant community of women entrepreneurs.

One of the most remarkable ones to have have crossed out path recently is Natalie Sisson of Womanzworld, founder of the Suitcase Entrepreneur movement. Natalie’s gig is finding online tools to help people run their businesses from pretty much anywhere in the world, and she does a fine job in setting the example herself. An uber social media savvy consultant, she has been a great help in taking the Lunapads social media practice to the proverbial next level. We have also enjoyed hearing about her current experience of life in Buenos Aires via Facebook, and looking forward to meeting her in person at the upcoming World Domination Summit in Portland OR.

When Natalie approached us about doing an interview about our journey as entrepreneurs, she sent us some great questions:

1. What do you love most about being an entrepreneur?
2. Can you describe the most valuable lesson you’ve learned in 10 years of business?
3. What has been the key to Lunapads continued success?
4. How are you embracing and integrating social media into your business?
5. What is one tangible result you’ve witnessed due to social media?
6. How do you incorporate online tools to help streamline your business?
7. What’s the one piece of advice you’d like to give to fellow entrepreneurs?

Check out the video to find out the answers!

Simple washing tips for cloth pads!

Wednesday, April 20th, 2011 by Suzanne

One of the most common questions we get at Lunapads is “How do I wash and care for my cloth menstrual pads”? Indeed, this unanswered question is often the thing that holds many back to making the switch to cloth. So, in addition to the washing FAQ’s on our website, here now is a short video with some of our top tips for washing your cloth pads.

A summary of key points:

  1. Washing cloth pads is not a big deal and isn’t gross at all. Caring for your monthly period in a gentle and earth friendly manner is rather liberating! Join the LunaRevolution!
  2. For lightly soiled pads and pantyliners, simply toss them in with your regular laundry; no pre-rinse is necessary.
  3. For moderately to heavily soiled pads: pre-rinse in cold water to remove as much blood as possible; then add to your regular laundry.
  4. Cleaning tip: make a concentrated pre-rinse solution to remove as much blood as possible during the pre-rinse phase.
Stain removal tip: immediate cold water pre-rinsing helps. BunchaFarmers stain removal stick works like a charm too!

What I didn’t explicitly cover in the video is how to discretely deal with your cloth pads when you have housemates who might not want to see your Lunapads mixed in with their laundry. That’s where our super handy Soaking Bags and Mesh Laundry Bags come in. These bags conveniently allow you to separate your pads from the rest of your laundry, and hang and store them discreetly.

These are just a few tips.  Please tell us how you launder your cloth pads. What washing tips do you have to share with your fellow Lunapads users?

The Goddess in You

Friday, April 8th, 2011 by Madeleine

I am really excited about this video, and hope that it will be the first of several about how women connect with their fertility cycles on a spiritual level.

Back when I first started making Lunapads, I was intrigued by Goddess spirituality and would often participate in women’s rituals around Vancouver in the company of my Goddess-loving BFF, Signy Wilson. They were very moving and beautiful and I fondly remember the power and magic of being in community with other women in this unique way. What has stayed with me from those experiences is a profound sense of Sisterhood (chief among Lunapads’ core values) as well as a deep awareness of my connection to Nature’s other cyclical mysteries via my menstrual cycle.

Our biggest Pads4Girls shipment!

Thursday, March 3rd, 2011 by Lunapads Team

Today is an exciting day at Lunapads: we’re sending out our largest Pads4Girls shipment ever!

Pads4Girls is an in-house project where we sell cost-priced daily hygiene kits to customers and non-profit groups to give to women and girls in developing countries. It can be hard to imagine, but lacking something as everyday as panties, pads or tampons is preventing girls in many parts of the world from going to school. Girls can miss up to 20% of their education, which can spiral into earlier dropout, marriage and childbirth, increased chances of maternal mortality, reduced career choices and wages, and a less empowered life overall.

Lunapads welcomes former o.b. users!

Monday, January 24th, 2011 by Madeleine

I don’t normally like to indulge in schadenfreude, but I need to admit to a teeny-tiny bit of gloating as we watch the saga of the missing o.b. tampons unfold.

I was just surfing the o.b. Facebook “fan” (not so much these days) page and found this comment to be representative of the trend: “I ordered my Divacup after learning about it from other women on this and other sites. Hopefully I won’t have to buy tampons anymore. I am sooo disappointed with J&J about how they handled this situation. No more Ultras? bye bye o.b.s!”

The good (no, make that excellent) news is that we are getting a ton of traffic and new customers as a result: so much so, that we made this little video to say hello! Welcome, new Lunagals! We think that you will find both our products as well as our customer service to be a welcome change. Let us know if you have any questions, and be sure to let us know how your new DivaCups and Lunapads work out. Oh, and for those of you who are still on the fence, use promo code “obwtf” to receive $5 off a DivaCup!

UnMarketing at Lunapads

Friday, January 21st, 2011 by Suzanne

As someone who has dabbled in Twitter for almost two years, a person I started following early on was @unmarketing (aka Scott Stratten). I was particularly attracted to his Twitter name, as it implied someone who was unconventional and forward thinking. His posts did not disappoint me. After meeting Scott in person at a trade show in Las Vegas last October, Madeleine and I quickly realized why Scott is a such a highly regarded social media expert and sought after keynote speaker.

Knowing that Scott was going to be speaking in Vancouver to promote his new book “UnMarketing: Stop Marketing. Start Engaging” (a national best-seller and must read book that we are giving away below!) we invited him to Lunapads HQ to consult with us about our website & conduct an “un-audit”. (As a former auditor of the accounting variety, I was rather nervous but excited to be sitting on the other side of the table and learn what the expert thought about our efforts.)

So, what did he think? Well, this autographed copy of his book sums it up.

Please also check out the impromptu interview I did with Scott and hear what he has to say about social media and some of the new tools and apps he finds interesting. Bonus info: find out what Scott and Justin Beiber have in common!

Scott, thanks for your stamp of approval. We love your motto: “Be Awesome”. (And Scott, I thought you’d appreciate this quote from Jack Black’s Kung Fu Panda character that I over heard while my boys were watching TV… “There is no charge for awesomeness or attractiveness!”)

Our social media endeavors are definitely a team effort here at Lunapads. Morgan and Lisa deserve most of the credit being the voices of Twitter and Facebook on a daily basis. Madeleine and I (aka Luna_gal) tweet about Lunapads and our personal accounts. Our YouTube channel has several thousand views.

Social media is work, for sure — but it’s really never been a chore for us. In fact, we consider ourselves lucky because we get to talk to tons of interesting people who genuinely inspire and challenge us. And, as a way of thanks, we’re giving away an autographed copy of Scott’s book to one of our readers. To enter, simply comment below about where and/or why you enjoy engaging in conversations online (ie: social media!)

PS: A big shout out of thanks to Marc Smith of Amuse Consulting and his team for bringing Scott to Vancouver in December 2010!
