Lunapads and the Great Cloth Diaper Change

April 12th, 2012 by Karen

Lunapads has always had a soft spot for cloth diaper-ers. Cloth Diapering often opens the door for conversations about reusable menstrual products with moms. You might say that cloth diapers are the “gateway drug” that lead moms to Lunapads!

We’ve been busy all month sending out coupons and door prizes to over 50 locations of the Great Cloth Diaper Change 2012. We’ve sent out well over 2000 coupons and we also donated door prizes to most of the events we sponsored. It is our way of supporting the cloth awareness event, organized by the Real Diaper Industry Association. Lunapads recently became associate members of the RDIA and I am so excited about the opportunities to educate women about Lunapads that this relationship will bring. While we are not in the cloth diapering industry, there is a natural link between Lunapads and the cloth diapering…we’re all about cloth!

I also love the people involved. People who love cloth, Mom and Baby Shops, creative entrepreneurs of all sorts coming together with a message of a healthier way to live that is better for the earth! GCDC is so amazing, picture this: all over the world on April 21 babies and diaper changers will gather to attempt to break their own Guinness world record for the most cloth diapers changed at the same time. There is tons of footage from last year and I hope to see more this year and another record broken!

Support your local Great Cloth Diaper Change, even if you don’t have a baby to change, they might need volunteers!

Read on for a list of locations that Lunapads is supporting. Read the rest of this entry »

What’s so great about cloth? Here’s what Amy at AppleCheeks has to say!

Are cloth diapers really better than throwaways? They sure are! In case you’re still holding onto old stats sputtered out by Proctor and Gamble a million years ago, here’s the skinny on your diapering options:

No matter how you spin it, cloth diapers is the better option. Did you know that tens of millions of so-called disposable diapers are thrown away EVERY DAY in North America? And, hey, in case you wonder why we call those Pooh inspired plastic bombshells “throwaways”, it is because the word disposable is, in fact, a misnomer.

We may “throw it away” but it does not magically get disposed of.  It sits in our tidy bins, finds its way to the larger garbage bin that some hardworking person has the good fortune to dump into a huge, gas-guzzling, super-compacting truck where said item journeys to a humungous landfill to sit for anywhere from a few decades to, much more commonly, a few centuries.

Besides, the modern cloth diaper is super cute on your Super Cute One’s tush. If you aren’t sure, check out AppleCheeks.com to see some pretty adorable babies in fabulous, modern cloth diapers. Happy diapering!

Thermal-Aid Review & Giveaway

TAproductline Thermal Aid Review & Giveaway

Everywhere I go, I’m looking for products Lunapads fans might like. Having been lucky enough to go to Expo West, I was in the mecca of Natural Health Products. Amongst an overwhelming sea of products and pitches, I located 10 ideas that I thought were really super kewl and special!

TAkidsbear Thermal Aid Review & GiveawayWhat first attracted me to the Thermal-Aid booth was their adorable little bears. A hot or cold pack sweetie that I knew kids would love, including older kids like me who love cuteness. But these products aren’t just for the little ones! There are Thermal-Aid Natural Heating Pads available in several sizes for grown-ups, too.

Lunapads has been on a quest to find a heat pack that is natural, free of BPA, and contains no other nasty chemicals. Thermal-Aid has the workhorse of natural heating pad options. Big deal, you say. Well, yes, this one really is a big deal! Ever tried rice, barley or other natural versions? Read this report for more details, but we all know moisture is a great place for mold to grow.

expowest Best Finds at Natural Products Expo West

This was my very first Expo West and the first time I was not in a booth at an industry trade show. I must say I enjoy the freedom of being on the buying side at a show, but my feet hurt more as I did many more miles of walking! This show, as it turns out, is hugeSuzanne and I focused on the health and beauty area, but dabbled in the new products area too. We located some real gems! These are just a few of them; there will be more in future blogs!

I love their “know your food” mentality, and what a great gift item! Grow your own mushroom kits and refills. I was looking for these last Christmas as it was the perfect gift for my hard-to-buy-for parents, but they had sold out everywhere! This company also is spreading the word about sustainability regarding our food. Know your food sources and grow your own is a really important message to be sharing. Thanks, Back to the Roots!

“Eww”; it’s a reaction we hear a lot from people who are learning about the concept of reusable menstrual products for the first time. Frankly, we aren’t surprised that people are uncomfortable with the idea, given the amount of fear and shame that has followed menstruation around, pretty much since the dawn of humanity. With all the negative advertising used to sell conventional menstrual products, the culture of silence surrounding menstruation, and the apparent lack of interest from the scientific and medical community in regards to menstrual issues, there’s a lot of baggage and misinformation to overcome in order for people to get comfortable with their reproductive systems and their byproducts. I’m frankly encouraged and impressed by the amount of people who DO use reusable menstrual products!

And yet the “Eww” factor always manages to baffle me. We hear it from all kinds of people; tampon users, disposable pad users, cloth diapering moms, feminists, environmentalists, young and old. The reason is always the same, “You want me to wash my pads/cup and use them again!? Isn’t that unsanitary?”

Well guess what, folks? I am here to tell you that the disposable products you may currently be using might not be as “sanitary” as you think.

Did you notice a change when you switched?

March 21st, 2012 by Karen

love yrself Did you notice a change when you switched?

Lunapads fans, I’d like to ask you a question! How long did you use disposables before making the switch to cloth? Did you notice a change in the way you felt during your period when you stopped using disposable pads or tampons?

My cramps have practically disappeared since I started using Lunapads. Weird, but totally cool and definitely welcome.  I can’t say for certain what caused this change, but I am loving it. Has anyone else experienced changes like this? Is anyone aware of any scientific studies about the chemicals in disposable menstrual products and their effect on cramps, bloating, and other PMS symptoms?

In the old days, women gathered together to share their wisdom when they got their periods by gathering in the Red Tent or Moon Lodge. There as they bled together, they shared wisdom, experience, knowing, excitement, fears and growing into being a woman. The elders taught their apprentices of the beauty of their period, the power of ovulation, the ups and downs that accompanied them and the respite necessary when one might need to cocoon. You were not alone. You were not expected to have it all figured out. You were not going against the natural laws of the planet or community.

I remember when I lived in the Eastern United States many years ago now, in a large farm house with many people coming and going from around the world. There were 20 of us living there and often more. This was a place where we were sharing our life wisdom, organic gardening before it was popular, and loving one another in our very worst along with our very best. We were in cycle together, in sync, in communion with each other and the Earth. We were educated, from all walks of life, and from many places in the world.

Lindsay’s First Period Story

March 12th, 2012 by Guest

lindsey coulter Lindsays First Period Story

Lindsay Coulter is David Suzuki’s Queen of Green, living in Vancouver, BC. A lover of nature and advocate of do-it-yourself, her first period came when she was 12.

*    *    *    *    *    *    *    *    *   *    *    *    *    *

I got my period in grade six—must have been 12 years old.

It happened at school; I knew what it was right away. After all, our class had watched those awkward videos about growing hair in weird places, etc. At lunch hour I grabbed my best friend Kari to plot next steps.

We ran to my house, half a block away (kids in my day walked to school!) and sussed out the bathroom for my mom’s tried, tested and true products. Yeah. That’s wasn’t happening. Think of how small you were at 12. Now, picture a super-plus Tampax tampon with cardboard applicator! There was no way this thing was going to fit. I also had no idea what to do with it.

Plan B: my friend said her mom used pads. And it was the 80’s, so we’re talking Kotex pads that came with a belt! Unfazed, we grabbed a box of facial tissue and a roll of scotch tape—we were in the sanitary pad making business now! (I was a DIYer at a young age.)

20% off IWD Sale at Lunapads.com

What’s wrong with tampons? Here’s a report from the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics about their concern for the lack of health & safety information about cumulative exposures to dioxins and other chemical ingredients found in many conventional tampons.

Reusable menstrual products like washable cloth Lunapads and The DivaCup are eco-friendly, money-saving, and body safe alternatives to disposable menstrual products. Lunapads will last well over 5 years with recommended use and care, and while individual use may vary, we estimate that a single Lunapad replaces 120 disposable pads or tampons.
