Construction and Performance

DivaCup Construction:
The DivaCup is made of a high quality, soft healthcare grade silicone that starts as a liquid. The molecules are then bound together (or vulcanized) with very high heat to form a solid stable piece of silicone (similar to the feel of soft rubber). The DivaCup is cured after production in an oven at a very high temperature to make sure all the molecules are bound and “chain linked” together. Since the end product is a solid material yet flexible and durable, there is no possibility for anything to leak into the body (no leaching). This form of silicone is odorless, is latex-free, plastic-free and BPA-free. It has been used safely in healthcare applications for over 50 years.

The FDA has cleared The DivaCup for use by the FDA for use as feminine hygiene protection. It also holds a current Health Canada medical device license.

Pantyliner Construction:
2 Layer, 100% cotton flannel base topped with gusset panel made with 2 layers of soft and absorbent 100% cotton fleece. Nickel-free, Silver-plated brass single snap fastening.

Wash and Care

DivaCup:
The DivaCup should be thoroughly cleaned at least twice a day (do not wear continuously for longer than 12 hours at a time.) Washing the cup in mild soap and warm water provides sufficient cleansing. The best cleaning agent to use is The DivaWash. We have formulated it as a pH balanced wash that is best for the cup and you, because it does not leave residue. Remember to wash your hands before inserting and removing your DivaCup.

At the end of each cycle The DivaCup should be washed and rinsed as specified and then submerged in an open pan of boiling water (continuous rolling boil) for twenty (20) minutes. Do not leave the boiling pot unattended and use enough water so that the pan does not boil dry.

Pantyliners:
Lunapads can be washed by hand or machine in any temperature with your regular detergent. Pre-soaking or rinsing in cold water prior to washing is recommended (but not always necessary) particularly if the pads are heavily saturated. Do not soak for longer than 24 hours.

We recommend natural cleaning products such as Nellie’s All Natural Laundry Soda for regular cleaning, and Buncha Farmers Stain Remover to perk up stained Lunapads. Heavily stained Lunapads may also benefit from occasional machine wash and dry in hot settings or air drying in direct sunlight.

Please avoid the use of chlorine bleach or fabric softeners to clean Lunapads, as this will decrease the performance of the products and is harmful to the environment.

Allow for a 5-10% rate of shrinkage for Lunapads after washing.

How to Use

The DivaCup:
On your first trial with The DivaCup, make sure you are relaxed and have time to read the User Guide thoroughly. Insertion and removal will only take a few seconds once you master the technique.

Read our detailed insertion & removal instructions here:
DivaCup FAQs

Pantyliners:
Wrap the Pantyliner around the gusset of your underwear and close the snap to secure in place. The fleece panel should be facing up (towards your body on the inside of the panty), as this is the most absorbent part of the pantyliner. Note that incorrect placement of the Pantyliner may result in result reduced comfort or performance.

So happy I swtichedReview by paleophyllum

I switched from disposable tampons/pads to Lunapads and the DivaCup at the beginning of this year by getting this kit as a start. Overall I am super happy I made the switch, and I never intend on going back to disposables again. I produce a lot less garbage, and I love that these products are better for my body and the environment.

Mastering the "technique" of inserting a DivaCup took awhile, but I knew there was learning curve. Honestly, I continued to have major leakage on heavy flow days. Did some research and discovered I have a mostly very-low hanging cervix. So when I insert the DivaCup properly my cervix actually occupies space within the cup, and therefore it doesn't have it's full 1 ounce capacity. Which sucks because on heavy flow days I can bleed 1-2 ounces easily. Having a low hanging cervix just means I have to empty the cup a few times a day on heavy days. In the future I may switch to a different reusable cup, but for now I am still happy to use the DivaCup.

Lunapads are overall pretty awesome as well. I have several mini pantyliners, I love using them on light flow days or as backup for the DivaCup on heavy days. Whenever I get bad cramps/PMS and just want to laze around on the couch, it's nice to wear the mini pantyliners because they are so comfy (as one friend articulated to me "it feels like a hug for your lady parts"). When I'm exercising, running around, walking, hiking, etc. I tend now to wear Lunapads because I find they get too warm and can move around a little bit. That's the only downside, but it's pretty minor, and Lunapads are still WAY better than disposables despite this.

My only suggestion to women thinking of making the switch to reusable cups is to figure out where your cervix hangs. If you have a low-hanging cervix like mine there may be better reusable cups for you than the DivaCup (i.e. ones that are smaller, designed differently). (Posted on 12/12/2014)
DivaCup Newbie turned DivaCup LoverReview by MissA

I don't even know where to begin... Well I started my period in the fourth grade. My mom made me start with pads. By sixth grade, other girls were beginning their periods and I discovered tampons, and made the switch. I'm nearly thirty and just discovered the DivaCup a month ago... You do the math on money I've wasted buying tampons in bulk!

I've always considered my flow heavy. When using tampons, I always started with an Ultra absorbency during the first few days, tapering to Super Plus, and ending my cycle on Regular. I had to change my tampons nearly every hour; if not, they would begin to leak, often times, without being fully absorbed.

So I'm surfing YouTube one day, and you know how one video leads to another..I come across a little girl about 15 years of age, talking about her menstrual cup.. "What in the world is a..." Click. So after hearing this CHILD talk about the joys and ease of using menstrual cups, I decided to give it a try. If she can do it, I can do it!

Well, I did it and I love it! I've been using the cup for 4 days now. I've worn it in the house the first two days but ventured out to work in it yesterday. No leaks! I will be honest - I was paranoid as all get out my whole shift!!! I initially practiced inserting the cup when I wasn't menstruating. I found that wetting the cup with hot water helps on insertion. When the cup is room temperature, it fees colder than it actually is to your canal opening, and I was unintentionally clenching my muscles. A warm cup is much more comfortable and may help in the beginning.

I use the punch down, folding it really deep to the bottom of the cup. And once in, I use the turning method to ensure the cup has opened fully once inside. I have a low pelvic bone. So the way I'm inserting my cup, the fold is facing up, facing my pelvic bone. I have to turn the cup a full turn to get the folded side facing away from my pelvic bone, so the fold will 'pop out.' So far the technique is working for me.

I actually changed my DivaCup at work, like many blogs suggest to do. I brought a bottle if water with me for convenience. I work 12 hour shifts in the emergency room. My pager had gone off to intubate someone right as I pulled the cup out! I panicked for a moment and almost resorted to using the tampon I snuck in my pocket. But I quickly dumped, splashed, scrunched, and reinserted the DivaCup like a Diva; twisted my cup a full turn, a proven method that works for me and returned to work.

It was nerve wrecking wondering if I had inserted correctly... Had I twisted my cup enough...? Did it even pop open...? I wore a Lunapad (I'm a Luna newbie too) just in case of leakage. But I had no leaks. None what so ever! At home I wore my cup about 10 hours with it being half full when I emptied it. At work, I emptied it after 6 hours, with the cup being about 1/3 full.

It's an amazing feeling to use the DivaCup successfully and I can't seem to understand how I've suffered so long with tampons not knowing menstrual cups existed.

So I've told a few friends about it. Most were pretty interested. I told my mom about it yesterday... She said, "What's a DivaCup? I go through the whole spiel, only for her to frown her eyebrows, stick out her lips and walk away saying, "Hmm."

The DivaCup isn't for everyone but the freedom and relief you'll feel while being on your period is worth the initial skepticism and learning curve. (Posted on 9/10/2013)
Love the Diva Cup!Review by Denise

OK, I've only been using the Cup for 2 days and it is AWESOME! There's a bit of a learning curve though. I couldn't get it out at first, but like the pamphlet says: "Don't panic". I waited for it get a little full and I was able to remove it. It's easier to remove if you only push the cup until the stem is flush with the vaginal opening. It'll feel weird at first, but the vaginal muscles kind of pull it in so it's comfortable. Tampons were drying me out and they're not cheap, so I decided to give the Diva Cup a try - and I'm glad I did. It's a little pricey to start, but it will definitely pay for itself the longer you use it. If you have trouble removing the cup, try grabbing the cup part instead of the stem. The grooves on the cup help to give you a bit of a grip. (Posted on 3/19/2013)
Perfect for everyday, sports, or travelReview by FiFi

I've been using the DivaCup for at least 5 years now, maybe longer. I'm about to purchase my third one. There have been times when I've purchased a box of tampons because I don't feel like using my cup, but no more! I'm going to be getting some LunaPads to supplement it and I cannot wait.
My favourite thing about the DivaCup is that I never have to worry if I forgot to bring backups because there is no need!! I also love how discrete it is. You can be completely naked and no one would ever be able to tell! If the DivaCup is something you've been debating, go for it. The price pretty well evens out after a few months anyways. Why Didnt I Get This Sooner?!?Review by Meg

This is the first cycle trying the Diva Cup, and I love it! The first time was a bit painful (it is unreal how much this 31 year old doesn't know about her own body!) getting it in, but after that, it has been fine. I have had no leaks at all.

I also love the pads. They are so much thinner than any pad I've ever worn. I generally don't wear pads, but I did the first few days of my cycle with my DivaCup because I didn't know if I'd leak while I was at work. Now, I cant stop telling people about it.

OK, and lets be honest here: the blood is kind of gross at first, but really, so were bloody tampons.
This is such a great product, and I love that there is no more plastic tampon applicators going into the landfill. (Posted on 4/14/2012)

Convenient, especially in the woodsReview by Beth

I got my Diva cup before I went on a month-long hiking trip. It was great! The other women had to carry out their used pads or tampons in a plastic bag, which is not only disgusting but also adds to the weight-- a big deal on a backpacking trip where you're already carrying forty pounds. Me, I just poured out the blood, rinsed my Diva cup, and put it back in.
After the first few times I found the cup comfortable and easy to insert. There are some Youtube videos showing how to fold it, or you can just fiddle with it. Be careful not to inadvertently insert air, which can be uncomfortable. I would recommend wearing a pantyliner just like you would with a tampon.
One thing: if you use it in a public restroom, you might want to bring some bottled water so you don't have to walk with it to the sinks covered in blood. (If you're in a pinch and not too prissy, urine is sterile, meaning it is actually cleaner than tap water in terms of bacteria and infection.) (Posted on 1/9/2012)

LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE !

It took me 2 cycles be a DivaCup pro, but I've got it and love it. I tell EVERYONE about it. The Pantyliner that came with it are super soft - love them. The only thing I would change, is a prefer longer ones, but they still work :) Really good for my last days were I don't have much fluid going on and a little dry.

:) Great Combo! (Posted on 12/14/2011)

Well I wanted to say that it was easy to get in, but getting it out was totally frustrating! I have difficulty grabbing stuff, so the little stem was pretty hard to reach. It actually made me nervous and I tried everything. Bearing down brought it down, but not far enough. I got freaked and actually just reached in and grabbed the side and got it out. I wish the stem was actually longer. It isn't a solid stem, so it smooshes and gets kinda moist so it's hard to grab. Since I just pulled it out that way, my opening hurt and was super sore for a few hours, (sorry for the graphics), but I must say that I didn't realize how heavy my flow was the first day. I will use it now always the first day! I could probably use it more often but for just the first 12 hours it's super heavy flow and I think it's the best time for a tampon type thing. I'm also glad to have an option for swimming days! Anyway, my advice, get one of these, BUT don't freak out! I think that's a bit scary to using the cup, but it works great! (Posted on 9/19/2011)

I have been wearing lunapads for about 3 months and really wanted to make that leap to the DivaCup however I saw it and was like What the HECK! THAT can go INSIDE ME!??!??!?! I got it and played with it for 2 days just folding into a dozen shapes and seeing what wouldn't be so scary. I think I actually appreciated the time I got to play with it before I used it. It made me less scared and able to relax.

Well, many times people have said it takes a learning curve. It didn't for me. I folded it once into the triangle shape, that didn't work because it was actually too small (I was thinking the smaller the better. It got part-way in and opened and it was too early, so I took it out, washed it in warm water (which helped relax my muscles) and folded it the c shape. It went right in.. I will admit that when it opens it feels kinda funny because you can feel it pop a little. Nothing startling but just a weird feeling (and sound!)

It's been years since I wore tampons because they pinched and felt gross and hurt when I pulled them out and they weren't "filled." I was thinking I'd never try anything "up there" again. But after talking to the Lunagals and reading all the other stuff, I was like I really can't go wrong here!

Thanks lunagals! (Posted on 9/17/2011)

This is the first purchase I made at Lunapads.com - it is also the best! I can't imagine my life without a DivaCup now. It has completely changed how I feel about my periods! Now I don't mind having my period at all! This kit is a great start, after I'd tried the pantyliners I HAD to buy some more, they are amazingly soft and pretty! I feel absolutely secure wearing them.

Lunapads How-to Guide

Reusable menstrual products are eco-friendly, money-saving, healthy alternatives to disposable pads and tampons. Lunapads will last well over 5 years with recommended use and care! While individual use may vary, we estimate that a single Lunapad replaces 120 disposable pads or tampons.

A Conversation about The DivaCup

There are lots of reasons to switch from tampons to The DivaCup; convenience, comfort, your health, the environment, financial savings & more. This first episode in our new video series shares the personal accounts of a group of DivaCup users, and explores what motivated each woman to try this innovative menstrual solution.

Why Switch to Lunapads?

Roughly 20 billion pads, tampons and applicators are sent to North American landfills annually. Each menstruating person in North America will throw away an estimated 16,800 disposable pads or tampons in their lifetime; products that require hundreds of years to biodegrade. Imagine the difference we could make if we chose to ditch the disposables.
