Construction and Performance

Construction
Pad Base: 2 Layer, 100% cotton flannel base topped with an absorbent panel made of 2 layers of cotton fleece, and 1 layer of PUL to prevent soaking through. Nickel-free, Silver-plated brass single snap fastening.
Insert: 2 layers of 100% cotton fleece.

Performance
A single Pad will get you through an entire day of your cycle; just change your Insert as needed. Inserts will last approximately as long (per use) as a comparably-sized disposable pad or tampon. Unlike most disposable pads, Lunapads do not contain any added chemicals, gels, or super absorbent polymers. Given this, Lunapads users need to be mindful of changing the Insert as frequently as their flow dictates in order to prevent soaking through the Pad. Frequent changing of the Inserts significantly enhances the comfort and performance of the Pad.

Lunapads will last upwards of 5 years with recommended usage and care. Many of our customers report they still own some Lunapads from 10 years ago!

Wash and Care

Lunapads can be washed by hand or machine in any temperature with your regular detergent. Pre-soaking or rinsing in cold water prior to washing is recommended (but not always necessary) particularly if the pads are heavily saturated. Do not soak for longer than 24 hours.

We recommend natural cleaning products such as Nellie’s All Natural Laundry Soda for regular cleaning, and Buncha Farmers Stain Remover to perk up stained pads. Heavily stained pads may also benefit from occasional machine wash and dry in hot settings or air drying in direct sunlight.

Please avoid the use of chlorine bleach or fabric softeners to clean Lunapads, as this will decrease the performance of the products and is harmful to the environment.

How to Use

Wrap the Pad around the gusset of your underwear and close the snap to secure. The absorbent fleece panel in the center of the pad should be facing up towards your body. Incorrect placement may result in reduced comfort and performance of the Pad.

Inserts can be added as desired by sliding under the ric-rac bands on the Pad. Multiple Inserts may be used for increased absorbency. Pads can be refreshed as desired by removing and replacing the Insert(s). Please note that Inserts are not intended to be worn without a Pad.

Love these!Review by Tiffany
Quality
I love these! The only thing I would say is don't order the inserts with the wings! There aren't any clasps on them so the wings literally just sit against your legs. They're really uncomfortable and add unnecessary bulk. Otherwise, these are awesome and SO soft! (I got the organic cotton) (Posted on 2/11/2016)
Quality went downhillReview by Sarah0406

I purchased a few of these about a year ago to try and loved them. I recently purchased a few more to add to my stash and was very disappointed. There is a very noticeable difference in quality. The inserts don't fit in well and are misshapen. I chose the inserts with the wings, and the wing on one side is way longer than the other. I should have made a larger purchase last year. Not what I expected. (Posted on 1/13/2016)
Better Than I Could've Imagined!! <3Review by Elizabeth
Quality
I just switched from disposable pads to Lunapads and I wish I would've used Lunapads right from the start. For starters, they're so comfortable! Disposable pads used to bunch up and were uncomfortable and felt dirty after wearing them for a few hours even though they weren't ready to be changed. Lunapads are incredibly soft, do not bunch up at all, don't feel wet, don't leak or rub off on your undies, and feel dry all day long. I completely forget I'm wearing it.

As someone who has used disposable pads all her life I will admit the idea of having to wash my pads grossed me out before I actually did it. Having a trashcan full of soiled disposable pads had such an awful smell but washing disposable pads is less smelly, less dirty, and less noticeable. I purchased a medium size wet bag with a strap and just hung it on a hook in my closet and when I am putting on a new pad, I just fold up and toss the old one in the bag and then when my cycle is over (or I run out of pads) I just unfold and dump all the pads in the washing machine, add a scoop of OxyClean, and hardly even have to look at them.

I know, the prospect of washing pads sounds disgusting and you might be thinking you could never do it but trust me, as someone who has thought the exact same thing, you won't mind it any more than you mind washing your underwear or regular clothes. I personally prefer to let my pads airdry because I think that makes them last longer but I'm sure sticking them in the drier would be easier and would work fine.

The mini pad and insert is what I substituted for a traditional, daytime, disposable pad as far as length and absorbency. Lunapads do not smell at all and are much more discreet to change in public (no more plastic pad wrapper sounds). Even if you're unsure about whether switching to reusable pads is for you, I really encourage you to order just one and try it out. You'll fall in love. On top of the personal benefits of reusable pads, they are also exponentially better for the environment and your wallet. Without all the waste from disposables there is much less garbage that you are contributing to a landfill.

Although Lunapads are expensive when you first purchase them, it is well worth it! The price of disposable pads is rising and buying reusables WILL save you money in the long run. I also recommend checking out some videos about disposable pads on YouTube is you need more info. But really, Lunapads are the best! Now I almost look forward to getting my period because these pads are so great! (Posted on 7/30/2015)
Sheet-saver!!Review by Bevey

So my biggest period problem, since I was thirteen, was it leaking onto my sheets. I used to try Always Infinity overnight pads, but they didn't help. I got this on a whim and I wear it the first 2 nights of my period and absolutely no leaks!! 100% would recommend to anyone. (Posted on 2/19/2015)
Radical!Review by Robyn

These are my go to as soon as I start my period. They are comfy and absorbent and easy to use. I used to get boils on the insides of my groin and I can now attribute that to disposable pads because since I started only using Lunapads they have stopped completely! Thank you thank you thank you!! (Posted on 1/15/2015)
I'm Addicted! Review by Danielle
Quality
I have a moderate flow and use maxi pads for day time. Although I have a smaller build, this size is perfect because it offers reliable coverage and comfort each day of my period - light, moderate or otherwise. A single insert is more than adequate for any stage of my flow (changing once every 5 hours on average), because I rarely saturate through to the base pad ... and have never experienced a leak. However, I do enjoy having the option to customize the absorbancy. I own 10 maxi pads with 22 matching inserts - Apple Blossom, Strawberry Jammin' and Red Rockets. The oldest ones in my collection are 3 1/2 years old and still in great condition. (Posted on 1/13/2015)

I am so happy I found lunapads! Thank you so much for your good services and your awesome product! I even initiated my sister and my niece. My niece is about to be menstruating and for now she uses the mini liner for leaks. + the softness and designs make periods more joyful! (Posted on 6/18/2014)
Would be great if they didn't slide so muchReview by May
Quality
I've been using cloth pads for several years now, and strongly prefer them over disposable pads. They're much softer against my skin, don't smell, and don't make that plastic crumple noise when I move. They do show a little wear after a while, though, and stains don't always come completely out of the brighter colored bands.
The major downside, unfortunately, is that sliding is a huge problem with my Lunapads. Wearing tighter-fitting underwear doesn't always solve the problem (not to mention being uncomfortable when I'm bloated or having cramps), and I'm not always in a situation where I can duck somewhere to readjust as this site suggests. So, if I'm going to be doing any sort of activity (tennis, hiking, jogging) or know I'll be outside for extended periods (i.e. away from the privacy of a bathroom), I still have to rely on disposable pads or tampons.
I continue to use them because they're too expensive to just throw by the wayside, and they do work well enough when I'm at home or work and can more easily readjust them. It's a pain to have to do that at all, though (one more thing to worry about!) so I'm unlikely to replace them with more Lunapads when they're worn out. (Posted on 6/9/2014)
Wow!Review by Katieb

I have been using Lunapads since I think about 2004---back when they had the thick rolled edges and the wings attached to the maxis! My daughter's first set of beautiful pads were Lunapads and I have a ton of Lunapads, but they have not been my first choice over the years because of the problem of leak through. Until now---Lunapads---you've done gone and made them 100% perfect by using PUL in the pads!!!! The 2 new ones I have are SO soft, SO beautiful...I simply can't wait to use them ;) LeakPROOF Lunapads have been a long time coming....but thank you SO much for this! (Posted on 2/12/2014)
love lunapads!Review by ay

I looooooooooooooove Lunapads. I'm so happy I made the switch to cloth pads. I love that I'm exposing my body to less chemicals now and producing less waste. My period used to be really heavy, but after using Lunapads it actually became a bit lighter - maybe because of no chemicals? I've been using them for at least 8 years, maybe more. They're so nice, soft and comfortable and I feel really good using them. (Posted on 3/6/2013)
Love it!Review by pomegranatetears

Many years ago (around 6), I purchased a Lunapad kit that came with everything I would need from small to large flow. I don't really have heavy periods, so I haven't had to replace the cotton pads in all those years. I can't believe how long they've lasted! They are also very comfy - much better than disposable pads. When I have to use a disposable pad, it feels really uncomfortable. I hate it!

I would definitely recommend buying Lunapads and am going to buy some for my daughters when they become of age. (Posted on 2/16/2013)
cloth for backupReview by Olga
Quality
I use the cup and love it but it does leak sometimes even if inseetrd properly, if I leave it in too long. There IS a threshold like one would expect with any product. That's why I use cloth pads as backup. Ladies cloth pads are AWESOME. Cost efficient just like the cup, and super comfortable. And generally more absorbent. Also, I don't mean to be gross, but when I use plasticy pads it leaves this odor I'm self-conscious about and actually you get none of that with cloth pads. (Posted on 1/4/2013)
Great for overnightReview by rlh
Quality
I've been using this for a few months now and find this to be great for overnight coverage. I've had the odd issue with leaking but usually because I didn't have a snug enough fit. As another reviewer said, boy shorts work well or else I will wear a boy short style, body shaping underwear over top of mine at night to just hold it all snugly in place.

I've been really glad to have purchased Luna Pads and find I don't have the rashes I had started to develop with disposables and they are super comfortable. I do find on my heavy days that I have to change the liners every couple of hours (I use 2 inserts each time with my liners on these days) but not a bit problem.

When out and about the Planet Wise stash bag is handy to have. (Posted on 12/12/2012)
They're good.Review by Nicole

This is a much better size and more comfortable than the long pads. Good for at home use. Product has washed well so far. (I removed the label on the pad). I still prefer the disposables for days when I'm not at home. I recently bought more Femme rock detergent. It's a good idea to buy a couple of detergents with your order to save on post. I've had mine for 5+ years...Review by Lily
Quality
and I'm sure they will last another 5. They are comfy and the patterns make me smile. Shall it be poodles (old fabric) or flowers today? :) I do buy new pads now and then, more so because Lunapads keeps coming out with cute new patterns!

My period is heavy for the first few days which can be uncomfortable if I'm at work. I usually bring 2-3 extra liners with me and on rare occasions, I've had leaks through the pad but this is because I've waited too long to change. I find that the pad, being fabric, still provides a lot of leak protection and it takes an extremely heavy flow over several hours to really soak through. I have a small pouch that I transport the used liners in. Wearing the right kind of underwear is important for a good fit. I find snug cotton boyshorts work the best.

I find that for me, washing by hand works better. Soaking/rinsing the pads right away when you get home is key. I usually soak pads and liners overnight in biodegradable dish soap. I have a large supply of empty yogurt containers for this. I then rub out the rest of the stains with a mild soap bar and let that soak in for several hours or when I'm able to get around to washing out the soap. I always hang to dry. This may sound like a lot of work but it really isn't and has become habitual for me.

For travelling, I admit that I have used disposable pads for a couple of overseas trips. If I'm staying at a hotel for more than 2 consecutive nights, then I'm able to hang them to dry but if backpacking, it can be a bit of a challenge. I would recommend the diva cup for travellers who may have to share bathrooms with strangers. (Posted on 11/23/2012)
My Favourite LunaPad Size! Review by Danika
Quality
When I first ordered from Lunapads, I chose Mini-pads and found that they were way too short for me. I exchanged for Maxi-pads and they were the perfect length for me to feel that they were reliably "there" and doing their job well.

As it turned out, washing/pre-soaking was a bit more than I bargained for, but the Lunapads customer service team was fantastic and helped me get switched over to a Diva Cup (this company is really committed to helping you find the right product for you!). But, if you are definitely a "pads" girl, I would 100% recommend this length! I'm 5'4 and 110 lbs (size 2, XS), and I really liked these for both daytime and overnight wear.

Hope that helps! (Posted on 9/6/2012)
maybe one day I will buy more.Review by Irina

About me: I eat organic, I buy local, my son was in cloth diapers, I walk and bike, I buy used clothes when I can, BUT, alas, I'm still on a search of a perfect cloth pad....

Pros:
- material is soft
- the insert does stay in place
- the pad tends to stay in place (unlike Lunapad pantiliners which are up my butt after 5 minutes of walking)

CONS:
- wings/flaps are NOT WATERPROOF (like the main part). Seriously! How hard is it to make them waterproof?! Sure enough, on the first ware my pad moved just a bit and the blood leaked THROUGH the wing and onto the underware. And no, the insert was not saturated at that point.
- if conventional pads tend to keep all the moisture and feel wet and slipper, well, the cloth dries fast, along with the blood and pubic hair stuck to it. Since I am not the type to subject myself to waxing, ever, I sure didn't enjoy pulling on my pubic hair :-) No, of course the bond wasn't as strong as wax' and I did in the end keep my hair, but it was rather painful.
- inserts get saturated pretty quickly
- you cannot toss it with your laundry as is (unlike the pee diapers which I sometimes washed with my own shirts), the blood might stain lighter items.
- also, I don't know where the rest of the ladies buy their disposables and how much they pay for them, but I usually stock up in Costco, so it's like 20c a pad or even less if you catch a sale (smtg like $14 for 96 pads). (Don't make assumptions, I shop in costco about twice a year with a friend for pads, Nellies detergent (100kg), nuts and stain remover)
So, suppose I manage to go through period with 7 pads and 2 additional inserts for each (that' in total $161, lets forget the taxes, since they have nothing to do with actual products, it's a government thing). Let's assume I use up 14 pads per period, that's 14*20c ~ $3. It will take you 53 periods to BREAK EVEN. That's roughly 4.5 years. And I'm not counting price of detergent, water, electricity and just the time and inconvenience for soaking, washing etc. And mind you, pads will probably last no longer than 5 years anyway. So, if you know where to shop for disposables and can stock up on sales you are not saving any money with cloth (you might even pay more, depending on aggressiveness of your washing machine). I agree that it is better for environment and perhaps for your skin and health, just don't talk money here. :-)))

Bottom line: with all the above, I can wear this pad at home, where I can afford a leak and where I can change the inserts every hour, but I cannot wear it to work, because I very often cannot go to the bathroom every hour. I think once the wings will become waterproof I'll give it another try. (Posted on 8/27/2012)
Made my life so much easier. Review by Bunnylady
Quality
I have been a user of Lunapads for five years or so now, but I must say that they've made my life so much easier, and better. I used to get ill during my period, with issues before and after, and I would hate getting it. Since I using Lunapads I'm not getting as ill and I don't dread my periods. Lunapads are so comfortable as well, not like I'm on a plastic mat. thank you for creating a product like this! (Posted on 6/14/2012)
love luna pads, but having a hard time with this oneReview by Jessica
Quality
This pad is super-cute, but I have a few problems with it. For a smaller pad, I'd like to see it be a little more narrow b/c the lining keeps bunching in the center. I'm also very aware of where the ric-rack is and it's kind of uncomfortable (not painful, but annoying like an itchy tag or something). I don't mind the ric-rack on the longer pads b/c it hits you in different areas. I guess for a smaller pad I'd hope that it'd be more comfortable and less "bunchy", although I did not feel this was the case. (Posted on 6/6/2012)
So HappyReview by Caitlyn
Quality
I'm 17 and went vegan about a month ago and I was just going to get organic disposable pads, so happy I didn't. They are so much better than disposables. They don't crinkle, stick to your butt causing that awful rash we've all experienced before, they don't smell (which I was wary to believe from other reviews but its actually true), you don't feel wet like disposables can make you feel and they are so comfortable. The absorbancy is also really good, for me they last about the same amount of time as disposables, maybe a little longer before I have to change the insert and I have a heavy flow for the first three days of my cycle. I would recommend these to everyone, I wish I had known about these earlier. LOVE THEM! (Posted on 5/28/2012)

Lunapads How-to Guide

Reusable menstrual products are eco-friendly, money-saving, healthy alternatives to disposable pads and tampons. Lunapads will last well over 5 years with recommended use and care! While individual use may vary, we estimate that a single Lunapad replaces 120 disposable pads or tampons.

A Conversation about The DivaCup

There are lots of reasons to switch from tampons to The DivaCup; convenience, comfort, your health, the environment, financial savings & more. This first episode in our new video series shares the personal accounts of a group of DivaCup users, and explores what motivated each woman to try this innovative menstrual solution.

Why Switch to Lunapads?

Roughly 20 billion pads, tampons and applicators are sent to North American landfills annually. Each menstruating person in North America will throw away an estimated 16,800 disposable pads or tampons in their lifetime; products that require hundreds of years to biodegrade. Imagine the difference we could make if we chose to ditch the disposables.
