Construction and Performance

Pad Base: 2 Layer, 100% cotton flannel base topped with an absorbent panel made of 2 layers of cotton fleece, and 1 layer of PUL to prevent soaking through. Nickel-free, Silver-plated brass single snap fastening.
Insert: 2 layers of 100% cotton fleece.

A single Pad will get you through an entire day of your cycle; just change your Insert as needed. Inserts will last approximately as long (per use) as a comparably-sized disposable pad or tampon. Unlike most disposable pads, Lunapads do not contain any added chemicals, gels, or super absorbent polymers. Given this, Lunapads users need to be mindful of changing the Insert as frequently as their flow dictates in order to prevent soaking through the Pad. Frequent changing of the Inserts significantly enhances the comfort and performance of the Pad.

Lunapads will last upwards of 5 years with recommended usage and care. Many of our customers report they still own some Lunapads from 10 years ago!

Wash and Care

Lunapads can be washed by hand or machine in any temperature with your regular detergent. Pre-soaking or rinsing in cold water prior to washing is recommended (but not always necessary) particularly if the pads are heavily saturated. Do not soak for longer than 24 hours.

We recommend natural cleaning products such as Nellie’s All Natural Laundry Soda for regular cleaning, and Buncha Farmers Stain Remover to perk up stained pads. Heavily stained pads may also benefit from occasional machine wash and dry in hot settings or air drying in direct sunlight.

Please avoid the use of chlorine bleach or fabric softeners to clean Lunapads, as this will decrease the performance of the products and is harmful to the environment.

How to Use

Wrap the Pad around the gusset of your underwear and close the snap to secure. The absorbent fleece panel in the center of the pad should be facing up towards your body. Incorrect placement may result in reduced comfort and performance of the Pad.

Inserts can be added as desired by sliding under the ric-rac bands on the Pad. Multiple Inserts may be used for increased absorbency. Pads can be refreshed as desired by removing and replacing the Insert(s). Please note that Inserts are not intended to be worn without a Pad.

Overnight Pad and InsertReview by plant_munch
These pads are great. Until washed a few times they shed a lot of fuzzies but this quickly passes. Great absorbency and very comfortable. (Posted on 6/20/2017)
Good idea, but...Review by Charie
First the positive. In abstract sense these pads are well designed, they are good quality and well made.
But, I am not happy at all with the absorbency. They hardly absorb any flow, and it will go through the insert and pad itself onto your underwear in no time. Keep in mind regular pads (disposables) have some wood product in them, not just fabric. So there is no way these inserts can hold up to the disposable versions in terms of absorbency. But, I'd still recommend them for the following purposes:
1. Being around your house
2. Back up for tampons or cups
3. Non menstrual flow
4. Very light flow
5. Days where you are not sure if you will get your period and want protection
6. Back up and extra protection for your underwear
Unsolicited advice for designers of lunapads... maybe incorporate some type of leak proof material or layer into pad itself?
Bottom line... they are still useful and much more comfortable than disposable pads. Will buy again.

ComfortableReview by Jennifer
Love these overnight pads. I would recommend those who are thinking of switching start with an overnight pad. They are so much more comfortable, you won't want to wear those disposables. After switching, I also noticed that my period lasts 4 days instead of the the 5 days it used to be with disposables. (Posted on 9/19/2016)
Love These!Review by KT
My periods are always REALLY heavy. I decided to try Luna Pads because I have sensitive skin. I love these for overnight. I use them without the insert during the day because it gets a bit thick and the insert folds down when I pull my pants up and down. They wash up really well, I've been using them for about 6 months and I wash them daily when I have my period. I am very happy with my Luna Pads!!! (Posted on 3/29/2016)
Comfy and Cozy, not sticky like disposables!Review by LMN
I have recently made the switch as disposables leave me with super irritated skin. I have used this pad on 2 periods now. My last night was pretty heavy and leaked onto my new underwear but thankfully not onto my sheets. I had the wing insert on and it seemed to pull it strait to the side...maybe I need to place a straight liner onto the winged, or just use 2 winged liners?

Either way I am pretty new to this and pretty much just need next months heavy night to play around and see what works best on my heaviest flow. It's possible being a stomach to side sleeper doesn't make it easy. But i love the feel of the cottony flannel!!! (Posted on 2/11/2016)
A must haveReview by Kimberlee
This is a must have item for those with a heavy flow. I've read some complaints about the insert coming with wings but I haven't experienced any issue with that, and as one person suggested, you could just tuck the wings under for even more layers or protection. I have a very heavy flow, I used to have a special blanket that I bought at Goodwill to lay over the sheets because about 75% of the time I would leak through at night and got tired of waking my husband up in the middle of the night so I could change the bedding. I no longer need that extra protection, these pads are amazing. (Posted on 6/21/2015)
The Mama of All Cloth Pads! Review by Danielle
My cloth pad stash is comprised of all Lunapads products.... As a bit of a minimalist, I enjoy having to buy fewer items overall, due to the long-lasting quality and the changeable base/insert styling (pads). I have a moderate flow and use Lunapads 10-inch maxi pads for day time. At night, my flow slows but I tend to drip (tmi) toward the back of my pad which causes occasional leaks.... and stains sheets, panties, etc. To resolve this issue, I decided to order 2 of the 14-inch overnight pads in Cabin Fever (such a cozy print - especially for winter) with a handful of matching inserts. For my body size, these pads are hilariously large, but they do a fantastic job! I just received these, so I have only used them for half a cycle, but I expect they'll be around for a long while.

My only suggestion: Please offer a wingless insert for your overnight pads! For now, I'm tucking the wings under, but I'd love to have a less cumbersome option. (Posted on 1/13/2015)
LOVE THEM!!!Review by Sarah
At first, when I was looking on this site I could not see myself using cloth pads. I thought to myself that is a thing in the past, but when I was reading all the reviews that these pads were getting, and looking on youtube and seeing how people really liked these pads. I finally ordered a kit and some liners to try out. The first night that I used them I could not believe that I have NOT been using them!! I did not leak at all(I have a heavy flow). I used to get up in the middle of the night to change, but not with the over night!! I love love love them!! If you are looking for something that will make your period easy, this is it!! I just got another kit in the mail the other day, because I love having all the different patterns that you can choose from. I wish I had these when I was a little girl first starting off. Now that I have found them I will not go back to the sticky non holding pads every again!!! MUST GET THIS!! (Posted on 2/25/2014)
Don't like wing?Review by Lauren
I love lunapads and these ones are great on the first couple nights of my period when it is really heavy. I don't find that the wings wick onto my clothes but sometimes I would rather have more absorbency without putting another liner on top.

So, if you don't like the wings hanging over the sides of your pad, fold them under but on top of the pad! No wicking, not noticeably bulky, and three layers of absorbency between the ric-rac. I do this on my mini pads during the day too and the wings stay folded under just fine even when I'm moving around. (Posted on 10/28/2013)
Good night’s sleep when I need it the most!Review by Lindsey
For the first time in my life I was able to sleep through the first and second night of my period without getting up to change my pad! I’m not sure how many women are out there that have heavy periods like mine but I’d like to share how lunapads has helped for those out there thinking about reusable pads. I find it pointless to use a menstrual cup or tampon the first two to three days of my period because my flow is so heavy that I’d have to change it every half hour to hour. In the day time I use the luna maxis with one or two inserts stacked and at night I use the postpartum inserts with an overnight pad. I find the lunapads are way more comfortable, absorb more and leak less than the disposable pads. I usually leaked at night every period and had to stumble out of bed multiple times to change my disposable pads. I haven’t leaked yet with my lunapads!

I love my lunapads! Cute designs, comfy cotton, no leakage, a good night’s sleep when I need it the most! (Posted on 4/19/2013)
Disposables are so gross!Review by Angie
I switched to cloth about 10 years ago and never looked back. These overnight pads are great for the first two days of my cycle and I am on here now replacing some that have lasted me 7 years! They are just now starting to look pretty worn out. Also, people talk about the special care for their pads but we have a large family and I just toss mine in my daily laundry so they get washed right away to minimize staining. I almost ALWAYS have a load of laundry going with 3 kids! This has seemingly had no ill effect on the pads as mine are lasting 7 years. (Posted on 1/23/2013)
I love my luna pads!!Review by Tamara
I have been using luna pads for a couple months, and I absolutely love them!! I used to only be able to wear super big pads during the day and night because of the amount I would bleed, so I was a little concerned when I purchased these because I wondered if they would even work for me. Luna pads have made me realize that I actually don't bleed as much as I thought! I used to get rashes (kind of like diper rashes) from my pads, but these are so soft and awesome!! Using re-usable pads have made me appreciate that I am a woman, and is a good way to learn that getting your period isn't gross at all, it is somthing the universe has gifted us with, and it is a BEAUTIFUL thing!! Some people think it is gross that I wash my own blood out of my pads, but I don't think of it like that. I don't get annoyed when I get my lady time anymore, I actually enjoy it most of the time!! The best part about using luna pads is knowing that while you are loving the soft ness and luxury of wearing them, you are also helping the planet so much!! This is the only planet we have, so let's save it baby!! YEAH!! Ha ha : ) (Posted on 6/4/2012)
Very Comfortable, Decent AbsorbencyReview by Julia
These are very comfortable and provide a large amount of coverage. However, like the smaller versions, I still find these prone to leaks around the wing area. Even with the tri-fold liner, I feel the absorbency could be better. The tri-fold liner is very thick (still very comfortable, but definitely noticeable), but I still feel that the pad itself is getting damp. As others have said, it would be nice if the ric-rac bands were also black. The winged liner option is comfy too and much less bulky, but I wouldn't use it on a heavy day as it would definitely wick the stain onto clothes.

These minor issues aside, I must say that the switch from disposables to reusables has been an absolute revelation. Once I really get comfortable using these products and work out what days it's best to use which ones, it'll be smooth sailing. No more rashes, itching or discomfort, and of course no more guilt at throwing away so much plastic and non-biodegradable substances. Oddly enough, even though I know a lot of women would think this would make them feel less 'clean' than a disposable, the opposite has been true for me. The breathability of reusables can't be beat and it makes a world of difference.

For anyone feeling squeamish about having a soaking vessel in the bathroom (or however else one would choose to deal with the used pads/liners), just compare it to having a garbage can full of soiled disposables. It's no more icky than that, and I happen to think it's actually far less 'gross' if you happen to live with someone (male or female) who might be uncomfortable with all things menstrual. You can always choose a vessel with a lid, and then voila - out of sight, out of mind. (Posted on 2/22/2012)
Fantastic!Review by Lavender
I originally purchased the overnight Lunapads as a “just in case” item. I love the diva cup, but thought it was wise to have some of these on hand just in case. I am so glad I did. I have been having kidney issues and encountering problems with mild incontinence. I am so glad I purchased these. They are soft, don't leave that nasty diaper rash feeling, or sweat. When you pick one out for the day it really boosts your mood to have the different fabric choices. Just knowing that the Heavy Pad is there really eases my worries. Thank you so much Lunapads! (Posted on 2/7/2012)
The best of the bunch. Love the wings; but there is also an alternative.Review by Rienne
These are my favourite of the Lunapads. They are great for the heavy flow at the beginning of the cycle, and are perfect for overnights. The hourglass shape on both ends is very smart. I actually also like the winged liners: the wing that snaps around the panties protects them, and the wings on the wing liner protect you from leakage beyond the sides of the pad in the middle. In case you haven't yet tried them, the heavy liners also available with these heavy pads 1) do not have wings (for any who don't appreciate them), 2) are better for heavy flow, and 3) are excellent for nighttime, when you might want to sleep rather than change a thin liner during the night. The heavy liner folds three times, so it absorbs 3X what the typical liner insert does. I sometimes get the benefit of both by putting the winged liner under the three-fold heavy liner for backup.

I would like:
1) If the ric-rac on all pads was black or another dark colour so that staining on it is not distracting.
2) If there were black & more dark colourful organic pad options.
3) If I could rationalize the outlay for buying more of these.
The heavy pads lose a star for these right now. (Posted on 1/17/2012)
great idea but need some improvementReview by Barb
Love the luna pads 14" length but wish they were slightly wider so that crotch of pantie is not crunched up when clipped together as this makes them prone to folding and pad and holder flopping foreward....another 1/2-3/4 inch on the wing where snaps are would help immensely.
Also the wing pads themselves are excellent accept I wish they too were slightly longer wings that would also have snaps on to hold in it is I am having to use big diaper pins to hold pads wings together so it stays in place...these changes would not cost much at your end and certainly would improve fit and wearability.
Otherwise an excellent product... Thanx (Posted on 1/16/2012)
Love the idea -- not happy with the linersReview by Ace
I wish I wish I wish that the liner did NOT have the wings -- these pads would be perfect if the liners didn't have wings. The wings don't appear on the other liners, I'm not sure why they're on these ones?

The wings on the liners end up wicking the stain around to my panties and clothes -- not ideal, to say the least!

I love the regular-sized pads, but for these overnight / heavy-day pads, I'm afraid I'm going to go to the competitor, whose liners don't have wings. (Posted on 12/15/2011)
Large and in chargeReview by Miss K
I purchased one of these recently (I’ve been using Lunapads in general for a while now). It's actually quite large compared to the others. I personally find this one is great for overnight wear or for lounging at home in your 'comfy clothes'. Definitely worth having at LEAST one of these in your lunapads collection! (Posted on 9/17/2011)
my favorite Lunapads!Review by basbleu
These are just the thing for heavy days and especially heavy nights. They are SO much more comfortable than disposable pads, and as others say, there's no leakage from tossing and turning at night.

I do find that with these, I have to make sure the liner is positioned correctly, because it is prone to folding. (Posted on 8/29/2011)
Best change I've ever made!Review by Amy Boulanger
They are comfortable, clean, absorbent, personal and fun! I am the nervous type who is always checking my butt when I walk by anything with a reflection! I wore the big size pads to make sure I never leaked. They were like diapers. I dreaded that time of month. I decided to make myself feel secure I'd get the big size lunapad when I made the switch. They are WAY more absorbent and I have never leaked! No more diaper, no more checking butt! (Posted on 7/9/2011)

Lunapads How-to Guide

Reusable menstrual products are eco-friendly, money-saving, healthy alternatives to disposable pads and tampons. Lunapads will last well over 5 years with recommended use and care! While individual use may vary, we estimate that a single Lunapad replaces 120 disposable pads or tampons.

A Conversation about The DivaCup

There are lots of reasons to switch from tampons to The DivaCup; convenience, comfort, your health, the environment, financial savings & more. This first episode in our new video series shares the personal accounts of a group of DivaCup users, and explores what motivated each woman to try this innovative menstrual solution.

Why Switch to Lunapads?

Roughly 20 billion pads, tampons and applicators are sent to North American landfills annually. Each menstruating person in North America will throw away an estimated 16,800 disposable pads or tampons in their lifetime; products that require hundreds of years to biodegrade. Imagine the difference we could make if we chose to ditch the disposables.
