Lack of access to menstrual products impacts millions across the Global South. Since its inception, in partnership with dozens of groups, individuals, and NGOs, Lunapads has helped provide over 17,000 girls and women in 18 nations with 100,000+ reusable menstrual products.
History Of Pads4Girls
Since 2000, Lunapads has been supporting menstrual and reproductive health and access to education in the Global South, a practice we call Pads4Girls.
Lack of access to menstrual products impacts millions of girls across the developing world. As many as 10% miss school because of it. The effect of these missed days is devastating, with girls missing up to 20% of their education, thereby increasing the likelihood of dropping out, earlier marriage and pregnancy as well as limiting career options.
Pads4Girls supports the provision of washable menstrual pads and underwear that will last for years. Providing reusable products means the burden of purchasing products each month is removed, and the environmental devastation that hundreds of thousands of disposable pads would have on the landscape is alleviated.
The case for girls' education is well documented as one of the most important tools for development. We believe that no one should have to miss out on opportunities that will affect their future, simply because they have a period.
One4Her: A Lunapads & AFRIpads Program
In 2008, Lunapads mentored the start-up of Uganda-based social enterprise AFRIpads. Four years later, we built a partnership program with AFRIpads called One4Her, to support menstrual & reproductive health, access to education, and local employment in Uganda.
One4Her is a fund made up of customer donations, plus a percentage of Lunapads' gross annual pad sales. This fund is used to provide AFRIpads washable pads to students who need them, and to support dedicated impact projects relevant to menstrual and reproductive health, like the Girl Talk booklet.
Girl Talk! tells the first period story of Ugandan adolescent girl Sandra. The booklet will be a valuable resource for girls throughout South-Eastern Africa to learn about what's happening to their changing bodies.
Groups in Africa wishing to receive AFRIpads or Girl Talk booklets are encouraged to reach out to AFRIpads directly.
Pads4Girls supports access to education for girls in developing nations outside Africa by offering sustainable, affordable menstrual care products made by our partners, Transformation Textiles.
Groups purchasing these products do so with a clear understanding of the intended recipient group’s needs, including access to clean water and soap for washing them.
They further assume responsibility for transporting them outside of North America, as well as providing appropriate instruction for the products’ use and care.
Interested applicants can apply below to purchase cost-subsidized Transformation Textiles pad or underwear kits for $5 each (minimum order 50 units, plus shipping costs, to North American addresses only).
“I used to stay home when I had my period. I didn't want to have a leak at school – it would have been so embarrassing. One of my classmates eventually dropped out of school because she missed too many classes each month due to her period. Now she lives at home and spends her days doing chores around her family's house. I'm fortunate to have an easy, effective way to manage my period. The Lunapads are easy to use and having them has made my life much easier.”
