Construction and Performance

Pad Base: 2 Layer, 100% cotton flannel base topped with an absorbent panel made of 2 layers of cotton fleece, and 1 layer of PUL to prevent soaking through. Nickel-free, Silver-plated brass single snap fastening.
Insert: 2 layers of 100% cotton fleece.

A single pad will get you through an entire day of your cycle; just change your insert as needed. Inserts will last approximately as long (per use) as a comparably-sized disposable pad or tampon. Unlike most disposable pads, Lunapads do not contain any added chemicals, gels, or super absorbent polymers. Given this, Lunapads users need to be mindful of changing their inserts as frequently as their flow dictates to prevent soaking through the pad base. Frequent changing of inserts significantly enhances the comfort and performance of our pads.

Wash and Care

Lunapads can be easily washed by hand or machine in any temperature with your regular detergent. Pre-soaking or rinsing in cold water prior to washing is recommended (but not always necessary) if your pad is heavily saturated. Do not soak for longer than 24 hours.

We recommend natural cleaning products such as Nellie’s All Natural Laundry Soda for regular cleaning, and Buncha Farmers Stain Remover to perk up stained Lunapads. Heavily stained pads may also benefit from occasional machine wash and dry in hot settings or air drying in direct sunlight.

Please avoid the use of chlorine bleach or fabric softeners to clean your Lunapads, as this will decrease the performance of the products and is harmful to the environment.

Allow for a 5-10% rate of shrinkage after washing.

How to Use

Wrap pad wings around the gusset of your underwear and close the snap to secure. The absorbent fleece panel should be facing up towards your body. Incorrect placement may result reduced comfort and performance of the pad.

Inserts can be added as desired by sliding the ends under the ric-rac bands on your pad. Multiple inserts may be stacked for increased absorbency. Pads can be refreshed as desired by removing and replacing the insert(s). Please note that inserts cannot be worn without a pad.

Amazing Product Review by Sonyaxpeace
I brought this kit three years ago and I am still using the same pads! They're wonderful and super great for my sensitive skin. No problems with the physical pad, it's well made, obviously since I've had it for three years. Just came back so I could buy some more. Minimal stains with regular washing in the washing machine. Would definitely recommend. (Posted on 11/10/2016)
So Comfortable!Review by Libby
I stumbled into the world of cloth pads by accident but knew I would love it - I have never liked having my period because of the disposable products - the tampons weren't comfortable and the risk of TSS bothered me and the pads rubbed, crinkled and left me with uncomfortable rashes for days after my period --- so I knew I would love the cloth -- but I didn't think I'd like it this much! They came right in time and I'm happy to say I'm never going back to disposables again! Cleaning is not that big of an issue and so worth it!

One thing I'd suggest - I got the Electric Aspen and additional black liners except for 1 unbleached one and while I got the black so I wouldn't have to worry about staining (and I really don't you can barely see it) the thing is, it's really hard to see so judging flow was more difficult then if I had a colour that I could see the blood on. -- minor thing but something to keep in mind when you are ordering your pads!! Six years and countingReview by Hannah
I got a set of Lunapads as a gift from my mom about six years ago. I've been using them ever since and would never go back. They keep me feeling drier with less odor and I haven't had to spend money on pads the entire time. I completely disagree that they "feel like a diaper." They are well-made and will probably last as long as I'll need them. I've tried several styles and Lunapads are great for someone wanting to make the transition from disposables to cloth.

Occasionally there are leaks to the underwear if I don't put in one of the inserts, but no more so than disposables and the wings keep it from going all the way through. The only downside is that they sometimes bunch or slip to one side, but again, I've had the same issue with disposables and at least with cloth it's still absorbent. (Posted on 3/27/2016)
Amazing.Review by Cait
Does sounding excited for your period sound crazy to you too? I actually was when I first got these. Cool patterns, I chose the organic option (which still has neat colours!) and surprisingly convenient. I no longer have to worry about having enough tampons/pads on hand for my not-so-predictable period. I just make sure all my lunapads are washed on a regular basis, and it's worry-free. The PUL bag makes a huge difference when travelling or just on-the-go. I LOVE my lunapads. (Posted on 3/23/2016)
Happy, period.Review by Meg
I am finishing my first cycle with Lunapads and am very pleased with the process. I don't know why I didn't switch sooner. I'm a full-time high school teacher and mom of two kids under 5, so if I can make it work, then probably anyone can.
At first, I doubled up the liners because I was afraid of leakage, but I really didn't need to because one was sufficient. The maxi pads were great for my first 3 days and when the flow lightened I used the smaller ones. I had no problems using them at work--I just put a wet bag I had from cloth diapering in my purse along with a couple extra liners and I was set. The liners are a lot more absorbent than disposables, so it appears that the flow is less than normal. I'm very happy with my purchase! (Posted on 8/21/2015)
First lunapadsReview by Camille
This is the first kit I got, and it's been love with lunapads since then. I'm a student and live alone so I added the heavy flow kit and three extra mini pads, as well as a seven day kit of mini pantyliners, because I only do laundry once a week usually). I also bought additional liners for my pads (the winged ones are great).
Now I have enough pads to safely get me through a cycle :)
Lunapads work, they're eco friendly, super comfortable and will save me money in the longer run. I'd recommend them to anyone. Caring for them rapidly becomes second nature. And I'm in a much better mood when I get my period :) I love Lunapads (Posted on 4/14/2012)
Very niceReview by Andrea
I really love cloth pads. It was a logical choice since I use cloth diapers for my baby. They dont smell like plastic pads, they dont aggrivate my girl bits like plastic, and they are so pretty! The ONLY draw back which is a totally personal issue is I choose the Posie pattern that has black liners and I cannot see if my pad is soaked. Its an odd feeling not to know. The first day I soaked all the way through the pad. But I just wont purchase any more with black on them. Other than that these are really great. You wont be dissapointed. :) (Posted on 3/9/2012)
GreatReview by Marianne
I got this kit yesterday, and put one of the mini pads and a mini liner on as soon as I got home. One word: Great! It does of course add some feeling of extra padding in my underwear, but I didn't expect anything else, other than that it's awesomely comfortable. I'll be getting some more pads for my next period, if my budget can allow it. Only thing I can think of, is that it took a while for my shipment to get here, almost a month. But since I got it shipped to Norway, I guess it's not all that bad. (Posted on 11/15/2011)
Why was I not using lunapads years ago?Review by Jennifer
Lunapads are ah-mazing! I am 24 and wish I would have started using them years ago. I only bought one kit and accidentally misplaced some of the pads. For my last cycle I ran out of pads (because they were hiding). I had to use disposable pads. Shhh! My first thought was "Who would use disposables? That's gross!" My whole perspective has changed. I am ordering a few more pads and vow to never use disposables again.

Lunapads are soft, comfortable, and fun! My eco-conscious feels better when I use lunapads. (Posted on 10/30/2011)
Great Product!Review by Caitlin

I really do. I was first turned onto them by this cute pro-women pro-eco-friendly store up the street from me and bought the starter pack in just plain ol' cotton. What can I say? THEY'RE GREAT. The pads are absorbent, they fit my panties well, and I love how in tune with my body I feel when I wear them! The ONLY down sides are that sometimes it feels like you're wearing a diaper, so I generally leave them for home, and they're kind of on the pricey side, which leave women living on their own with a tight budget (like myself) dying for more but unable to get them. Great way to start!Review by kj
I bought this kit 6 months ago and I'm so happy I did. If your flow isn't too heavy and you don't mind doing laundry more frequently this kit is all you need. The pads are super comfy too and in such cute patterns.

I wanted to start using cloth pads to be more green. I thought it was going to be a sacrifice to give up my disposables but it has been completely the opposite for me. I'm also a college student and I thought it might be too hard to deal with while at school but it's not. I just take them in the shower with me and wash them out.

Everything I hoped they would be and more!Review by Johannah
I used to use the ultra thin with wings disposable pads and was hesitant to buy a set of cloth pads for fear they might be too thick for me and feel too much like a diaper. Much to my surprise these pads felt SO MUCH better than a sticky, damp, noisy, disposable pad. I would say these pads are slightly thicker than my old disposables, but the comfort and the way I feel totally outweighs that! I have also found that the mini pad is really more of my regular everyday pad and the maxi is good for heavier days and overnight.
I have had these pads for a year now and have since bought two of these starter kits and one extra of both the mini and maxi pad (I wanted the new fabrics too!). All together I can get through my period without having to do laundry, although some periods are longer than others, so I have to do some washing.
I received my pads the summer before going into my senior year of college, so I had the summer to figure out rinsing, washing, and drying in a discrete way. At school I lived with two other girls, one of whom knew I used Lunapads and the other did not, since I wasn't quite sure how she would take it. It wasn't until half way through the year when I bought my second kit that I told my roommate I used them! I rinsed my pads in a one person bathroom at the sink (as opposed to the community-style bathroom) and hung them in my closet using pant hangers before I threw them into my regular load of laundry. There was never any smell and nobody ever saw them if I didn't want them to. I had also purchased a laundry bag so that I could bring my pads from the laundry room to my room to dry in my closet.
This is a great product that I love, works like it says it will, is stylish, and eco-friendly! :) (Posted on 7/17/2011)
Poor qualityReview by puddinz
I purchased a lunapad mini pad and liner. The workmanship is very poor on the pads especially on the serge - it looks like it has been done by an apprentice. Within 2 washes the stitching had come loose and needing fixing. The liners dont fit in the pad without bunching up either. Very overpriced for the poor quality. (Posted on 7/4/2011)
No more wondering or worrying "do I have pads at home?"Review by Susan E.
I purchased the starter kit and divacup about 2 yrs. ago because I was tired of the horrible experiences with disposables: the irritation and uncomfortable experience, high cost, having to run out to get more every so often, waste, etc.; I figured there HAD to be a better way. I got online and found out there were but none I'd dare to try, they just seemed impractical and flat out disgusting, until I came across lunapads. They're idea was expensive but made sense and was kind of cute, loved that it could be personalized. Took the risk and never looked back! I'm not going to say that my period experience is currently accident free but I can definitely say it is A LOT more pleasant, the way it should be! That time of the month I don't want much hassle, I just want to be comfortable; reassuringly pampered but not overbearingly smothered, these definitely do the trick. They are soft and comfortable, as others have stated.

I vary the combo at whim but I'll detail the most common in case it might help another lunagal with average flow. My first day is light so I can get away with using a mini pad with a regular liner throughout the day and sleeping with a maxi pad with a winged liner, just in case. I used to be a tampon gal because I hate messes so by day 2 I turn to the DivaCup for reinforcement - I use the second mini pad and a liner for back-up and empty out the cup every 4 hours; this I use day and night, I've found if I don't I soak through and stain. Day 3 I toss the DivaCup and go with the second maxi pad and a regular liner during the day and winged liner at night if I'm going to have a mellow day, if my day is going to be hectic I stick with the 2nd day combo previously mentioned during the day and the night 3 setup to sleep in. Day 4 is moot so I can pretty much go with nothing or a pantyliner. Day 5 is my flush day so I can go with either a mini pad with no liner or a pantyliner. I hope this gives you an idea of how much these pads can actually hold and how comfortable they truly are. I read some mention of bunching, my experience is they do bunch up sometimes (on hectic days for me) but it is hardly noticeable as it isn't as uncomfortable as when disposables bunch up and in variation: when luna pads bunch up they're absorbency is not affected (as stated by another reviewer), not true with disposables. For me, this is DEFINITELY the best way to have a great period. (Posted on 6/14/2011)
Why I'll never go back to disposablesReview by Allya
No more crinkling noise, rough/plasticy feel, or adhesive in the wrong places. Less cramping. More comfort, and friendlier to the planet.

This was the perfect introduction to lunapads for someone with a light-medium flow.

Breathable ComfortReview by fishpelt
I just completed my first cycle using Lunapads! I am so excited too. With disposable tampons or pads I normally get sick (dizzy, headaches) and by the end of the fifth day I would be so itchy, red and irritated down there that it was uncomfortable, which was my main reason for trying these alternatives. I felt so much better after my cycle, no sickness and no irritation! These pads truly allow you to breathe and move with comfort. Half the time I forgot that they were there since they just feel like cushiony underwear! No sticking, no bunching and no bad odor smell!
The only complaint that I have is that the liners do shrink up when washed/handwashed, which is to be expected with 100% cotton. My only suggestion is that they be made a 1/2 or 3/4 inch longer to allow for shrinkage. Other than that, I am 100% happy and telling all of my friends! (Posted on 2/6/2011)
love this kit Review by Katharine
This is such an excellent place to start. I had never seen a pad that was the shorter length of the mini pad so I was quite hesitant in regards to the size. Now 6 years later I almost exclusively use the mini pads with the regular maxi size for overnights. This kit really does allow one to find what will work for them. It is really not large enough for my typical cycle but once I determined what I liked (ie the mini vs the maxi size and the winged vs not winged liners) I was able to then purchase to my needs.

Perfect Intro into Cloth PadsReview by Jessica W
I had never used cotton pads before and didn't even know that there was a company that made them, even though I had always wanted to try a fabric type pad. When I found Lunapads, I bought a Starter Kit right away and it has been perfect.

I use the larger pads and liners during the first couple of day during my cycle then the smaller ones when my flow gets lighter. The pads don't bunch up and get all uncomfortable like the disposable ones do, and you never run out - just do a load of laundry and you're good.

I love all the fabric choices too, they are so cute and soft it really makes that time of the month much less of a hassle. I will be buying more Lunapads in the future for my postpartum needs. (Posted on 10/22/2010)
Very satisfiedReview by Rebecca
The ladies at Lunapads show wonderful customer service: even though my order was back-ordered for awhile, they kept me updated by email about how things were going. I had actually placed two orders, since at first I just wanted the Starter Kit then decided that I also wanted a smaller pad to be able to carry around with me, and they put the two orders together for me.

As for the pads, I was so excited when they came in. I almost wanted my cycle to start -- which is very abnormal for me!

The pads are very comfortable, and you use them just about like disposable ones. The small pad that I bought to put in my purse worked wonderfully; it kept me covered until I was able to get home and put on a bigger one.

I have very light flow, so I didn't even use this whole kit during my cycle, but the options did work well for my needs. I found that I could use one pad for a day and a night, just changing the liner.

They did bunch up a little bit, but I wonder if it's just because my underwear has a wide crotch. At any rate, it didn't affect their coverage. The ones with wings did bunch up more, so I probably wouldn't purchase any more of those.

I did soak them each time I changed, and renewed the water every morning and night. They were not terribly stained when they came out of the washer. I hung them up to dry, instead of putting them in the dryer.

Overall, I am very pleased with this product! It is so much nicer than rustling around in disposable pads, feeling like you're wearing a diaper and hoping that no one notices the stale smell around you. The result is very much worth the investment. (Posted on 10/22/2010)

Lunapads How-to Guide

Reusable menstrual products are eco-friendly, money-saving, healthy alternatives to disposable pads and tampons. Lunapads will last well over 5 years with recommended use and care! While individual use may vary, we estimate that a single Lunapad replaces 120 disposable pads or tampons.

A Conversation about The DivaCup

There are lots of reasons to switch from tampons to The DivaCup; convenience, comfort, your health, the environment, financial savings & more. This first episode in our new video series shares the personal accounts of a group of DivaCup users, and explores what motivated each woman to try this innovative menstrual solution.

Why Switch to Lunapads?

Roughly 20 billion pads, tampons and applicators are sent to North American landfills annually. Each menstruating person in North America will throw away an estimated 16,800 disposable pads or tampons in their lifetime; products that require hundreds of years to biodegrade. Imagine the difference we could make if we chose to ditch the disposables.
